Think Alpine is the closest town that has any lodging to speak of, I haven't been there in years but it was that way then. The chili cookoff was usually camping out and travel trailors....or when ya drank too much tequilla sleep on the ground. Maybe some one has been there since I have.

Their are some motels in Lajitas and areas, not many. Some great hole in the way Mexican food places. http://www.texasescapes.com/WestTexasTowns/TerlinguaTexas/TerlinguaTx.htmGive this a shot. I haven't been fishing at the Bend or state Park in about 5 years. Lajitas has Soda Fountian diner, and other areas of interest. Don't forget to check out ole Clay, Major of lajitas. Out drinks most tourist every day. His DAD was an alcoholic as well. For most that don't know, Clay Henry is the beer drinking Billy Goat at the General Store. Hand him a bottle of Lone Star, he'll grab it and tip it up on his own and down the bottle in fast way and then smash the bottle off his big rock he stands on in his pen. Worth a picture or two.

Out there last week. Alpine is a good choice. Our conference activities were at Sul Ross State, and they did a very good job. Lot's of small motels and a newer Ramada. Decent food, especially a little Italian restaurant,La Tratoria.

forkduc,
ya, we actually have thought about Alpine and Sul Ross State. And funny you should mention La Tratoria because I've been hearing good things about the place.
Hook'emUTbass,
So, there's actual water down there to fish, eh? hmmmmmmm.....
CD, Will also check out The Gage

Not too sure of the Italian food out there, but Duc is right probably the best places would be in and around Alpine. Plenty of stuff to do around there. If You plan on being there in October, you probably going to be hardpressed to find any Rooms ie, Chile Cook Off. You know the little Ghost Town is pretty neat though, they used to offer a Golf Tournament followed by a Jack*ss Roping. Those were the Days

"NIGHT TIME IS THE RIGHT TIME" Ya, but unlike yourself I kept my clothes on and didn't try to mate with an Owl.
