Ok, I'm big boy going on 74 years young.

Have back issues.

Got 12 ft Jon Boat
Had a lawn chair in the car, hey it straddles the boat seat.

Grandson rows. {25 yrs}
I'm in the back. Thinking that next time out wont use
the lawn chair, I felt top heavy.

We fished for about 4 hours. Grandson got skunked.
I got 3 nice ones.

Then one stupied move, I casted with my right hand
over my left shoulder (most of the day) last thing I
saw was my grandson holding on both sides of the boat
I'm thinking to myself
"I cant take him over with me".

Dropped like a rock head first down off the side of the boat, went down about 5 ft.

Thinking which way is up. Then saw light on the water.
started swimming upwards, seem forever. Grandson
claims I popped up like a bobber

(Had my life vest on!!!!!
You hear that guys..........use your da.............m life vest)

Now here was the problem,
fully clothed, 74 no strength in the arms. If I tried to pull myself in on the side of the boat would have tipped it over.

Floated to the rear, tried to lift myself up, felt like a rock.
If the grandson came to the back of that 12 footer we both
would have went in.

Here we are on 20 acre lake on a Monday semi private lake.
What are the chances of someone else being out in the lake on a working day? Zero to none.

Just happened there was a pattoon boat he came over
and it was about all we could do to get me out.

There are going to be some changes made.

1.) a solid step ladder off the rear, removable.

2.) that small of boat there will be a buddy system (no more lone trips for this old bird)

3.) some sort of out rigger like the Hawians have on their little dingges.

What have I missed,

WANT TO GET BACK ON THE BULL AND RIDE HIM AGAIN.

The reason I am airing my dirty laundry (clean now) is
to bring up the safety issue, so beware

I AM WATCHING OUT FOR YOU"

14'x44" john boat will cure the stability problems. Ladder on back is already installed on mine. I ain`t but 60 but multiple surgerys and 5 bypasses have taken thier toll on the upper body strength. The bigger boats with tilt and trim, all need a power tilt switch on the motor, You can crawl up on the fin and tilt uourself up to an easier entry to the boat.

Bob#1,
Thanks for the reminder, sorry that incident had to happen for a reminder... hammer We often don't think of things such as that as we are always interested in the fishing instead of the saftey.... thumb
Thanks again, wish I knew what would be the cure for the boat..... noidea

I have fished all my life (I'm 35 now) and I have only seen 2 people fall out of any kind of boat and both of them were in a 12' jon boat with a lawn chair! I'm glad that you had a life jacket on. Maybe next time leave the lawn chair in the truck? Good luck and stay safe.

Great actual happenings. Great that you wore a vest.
I've emphasized about wearing a vest number on times in here. Hope everyone is safe at all time.
Happy to see you are perfectly WELL

Happy to hear you are O.K. Bob!

Something like that will put an end to an otherwise good day.

I'm glad you're okay and hey it happens. I had a guy fall out of my ranger last year. Needless to say I was laughing when he popped up. THe funniest one I ever saw was a small alumminum on a private lake. A group of us in a frat went fishing one guy brought his small boat and motor and thought he'd be a stud. Well he loaded the boat with a 1,000 bucks worth of tackle and took off. Problem....he forgot the plug. We watched as the nose kept getting higher and higher as he trurned circles before it rolled...down goes the tackle. He was okay but we had to wait for a long drift to get his ice chest and he had to go back with scuba gear to get his rods and reels the next day.

Thanks guys for the nice responses.

One lady said Quote: "I make my small kids wear vest, but you got me to thinking what help would they be if I fell in and was knocked out. Going to get one of those self inflatables now!"
Unquote

If nothing else I reached one lady and her kids.

Glad everything worked out and you are ok. You just never know. When I go fishing by myself I always have mine on and it is a rule I never break.

Glad you had the vest on or it could have been worse,I never told this but about 5 years ago fishing out of my skeeter in high winds I had the trolling motor turned all the way to the left and set on high 24 ,I had just took a fish off and was not watching where I stepped and hit my hot switch, the front of the boat went left and I went right into lake grapvine, still holding my faverite spinning rod,I was able to throw the rod in the boat and swim to the back and get in before being washed up on the rocks,it was as close to getting in trouble on the lake by myself as I have ever come,I was lucky I did not hit my head on the way in.
