Here lately my buddy and I have been doing pretty good at catching crappie and sandbass as we wait for the catfish bite to get hot. We have been freezing the guts from the fish we clean in the shape of blocks to use later in the chumming of our catfish holes. We threw one of the blocks out for a test run in my stock tank and did really well as we caught numerous channel cats. We used frozen shad and Danny King's as bait. Hope this helps!

not to burst your bubble, but i'm not sure testing one in a stock tank is going to be a true test.
I do however think its an excellent idea and could work great as long as it don't melt too fast.

Yeah I know a stock tank isn't a real good test, but if it's any consolation the pond is about 15 acres. Plus, being a college student it's hard to always find the time to take the boat out.

i'am not 100% but i belive it's illegal to use any parts of a game fish to take another fish.. even if you are chumming with intent to catch...cause if you could... can you imagine a 1 lb sandbass skeleton on a jugline ....just a heads up !!!!!!

I believe your right Rookie, though it would probably be hard to prove where the chum originated.

well...then just use non game fish. i wasn't trying to start a TP&WD open discussion I was just saying if you take some of the guts out of fish (for instance carp, which are not game fish)and freezed it into a block, its a good chum for catfish.

Not too sure that it's wrong to use carcasses of game fish for chum...
My marina has a poster board published by the TP&W entitled "Clean Boating." It talks about various things for keeping the lake clean, but at the end it talks about using the carcasses of cleaned fish as chum on "your next trip"

When i was a kid we ran out of chicken livers and used the livers from the catfish. It worked . Caught more fish until we ran out of that too but this was a long time ago.
If I'm lucky I'll die with a 7' spinning rod in my hand.

Alot of folks at CC use the carcass of the sandbass/crappie they catch to chum their docks for cats. It's common practice there. You can't use them as bait in any way.

J/K Yea they have guns and have the right to use them. And if that don't take the cake they also have the right to repo your stuff----like your boat-----like your gear.

If a game warden happens to show up. Ask him to take a big wiff of your new fancy chum and ask him if he can tell what fish you used for chum.
