I was wondering if anyone in the DFW area would be interested in getting their Captains license?
I have contacted one of the schools in Houston and am checking to see if they would do a weekend class in the DFW area.
If you are interested let me know. Please post rather than emailing so we can keep track of interest.

Yes - What materials are a good primer for this? Is there an advance package?

I am waiting on the guy that runs the school to call me back. As soon as I have more information, I'll post it.
In the mean time, you can call 713-948-3350 if you want to have the registration forms for the license mailed to your house.
If for no other reason, the boating practices, safety, and emergency procedures you learn would be worth the time.

Just got off the phone with Capt. Roy Weeks. The class is $650 - 60 hours - 3 weekends. They can host a class in the DFW area with a minimum of 8 people - max of 12.
Classes include all materials and fees. License test is taken in the classroom at completion of the class - he said they have a 91% pass rate.

I used to hold this lic. and like an idiot I let it expire years ago. When I got mine another guide and I studied at home together. This is possible but very much more difficult than a class. At home you have no idea the questions and area of law that will be given on the test. I was on the deans list in Coll. and spent over 500 hrs. in study and failed the test once and just barely passed the 2nd. My friend passed on the third try. Before you spend any money find out about the qualifications as some of you wont have enough sea service to qualify.

I still have a study guide that I bought a few years ago when I got my guide license. NO KIDDING, it is a tough test. I took it 3 times - but for an LSU grad I guess that could be expected! The class is by far the best way to go but the fees do not stop there. After the class fee you will need to submit to a criminal background check, a full medical workup, and other fees that add up to about $2500 as I remember. All of this is necessary for a 6-pack license - the minimum. I felt far too cocky when I took the test - I had more than 40 years of fishing experience. Humility is a wondeful thing - the navigation, horn signalling, and ocean going stuff will break your back. Do the class and save a lot of grief. Good Luck, by the way, I can find the study guide for anyone who wants to look it over.

I'm interested but can't make a definite commitment right now. When you get some dates, costs, etc., I'll be able to tell you, yes or no. -steve
