looking for people's opinions and or facts relating to cold fronts and their effects on catfish.....seems like everytime i get some time to go down to the brazos in glen rose a small cold front is coming through on that day. I have always been told that cold fronts turn the fish "off"... is this true?

I bet it would not affect river fish the same way it does with lake fish. Normally with these cold fronts you get rain with them and that always seems to tirn the river fishing on. I don't know but that would be my thought.

cold fronts don't make the fish stop biting ... it makes them relocate and scatter and makes it a little tough to locate them but they still feed after cold fronts. if they didn't then I'd go broke. usually the way they move is south from whence they was prior to fronts ... there are overriding factors such as fresh infuxes of water which will alter this but true northern fronts in winter that don't put an influx of water into the lake will send fish in a southern direction. that's all that happens but after the wind has been out of the north for several days ya just go south from where they were and you'll find them in most cases except when there's water coming into the lake and when there's water coming in the fish will hold around the mouth of the river in the current eddys. then when the southern winds take back over they'll move back north again ... bluecat are an open water fish and follow shad movements and due to undertoe or whatever ... the shad will usually end up whichever way the wind is blowing ... south winds? shad will be on the north side mostly ... north winds ... shad will be more on the south side .. only thing that alters this is current but there are rare occourances that will change this up a little ... water clarity also will be a limiting factor to this as clear water situations keep them from moving around so freely as blues hold to structure a little more so or deeper in clear waters so movements aren't nearly as abrupt as they would be in muddy waters and restricted more to night time movements and a lot of times you'll just have strong southern winds during the day and nothing at all at night so fronts move through in clear water and they just scatter at night or hold tighter to structure and get up under stuff (hunker down in other words) ... ya gotta take a lot of things into consideration as I can't cover every scenario to explain the exact movements as there are none from lake to lake but in rivers the hunker down scenario would be more prevalent in more cases than not. fronts may also work the opposite on the flathead as sometimes those northerns ... especially in the fall, will turn flatheads on to where they'll feed on cut baits more so than just about any other time. it's an instinct thing where they are approaching winter and have to fatten up so they may not be able to catch enough live bait so just anything will have to do, or so it seems that way.
