Seems some of yall catch them often. I used to fish there quite a bit and rarely caught any of decent size. Tore up the sandies though. I usually would troll DD22s (hooks on) with something behind them, or use a 1 oz slab. What would I need to do to catch more hybrids? The whites are fun but catching only little fish gets old. I think I'll be going this Saturday.

The hybrids I catch at Somerville is probably not what your looking for, but ocasionally while fishing for whites with live shad on the bottom, I'll catch a few. There are some good ones this year though. I've got a 5, 7 1/2 and 8 pounder this year. I have also caught a few undersize ones. I would like to know what folks do on this lake when they target hybrids. It is probably a location thing.

Hey guy, have not been out for a few weeks but they had been hitting top water early in the mornings and late in the evening. I use a 1.5 oz jig head with a salt water sassy shad tail uaually bone colored or blue and white or black and white and if the fish are on top burn it in or if they are deep fish off the bottom or slow roll it. I also fish with BIG top waters such as pencil poppers in shad colors or peacock bass lures that make ALOT OF NOISE. If you want to target bigger fish troll with bigger bait it will cut down on all the smal bites on the day. Lately they have been around the dam or between the rock island and the spillway. For deepwater action go to the north end of the dam where the rocks start. Turn west and drive straight toward the marina. Watch your depth finder, you will go to around 25-27 feet of water. Wacth where there is a knoll on hte bottom that will rise to 17-19 feet and look for the fish on the sloped or on top. You can fish this with the big jigs or use a red fish type rig with a leader of about two feeto with a BIG shap hooked in the mouth and either use the trolling motor withour any wind or drift with the wind. Let your line down until it hits bottom and then set the drag. As you drift move your rod up and down slowly off the bottom about two feet only. When you get a strike they will either try to teear the rod out of your hands or hit and let go. If they hit and let go take your rod and drop the tip down and let the bait settle to the bottom. they will come back in short order and massacre the bait. This will usually produce much bigger fish. When you catch one like this mark it with a bouy and keep coming back over the same place. I have used this and have limted out without any problem and started culling big ones. Good luck.

Speed perch, that is about the best info on hybrids on Somerville. It really makes sense, and reminds me of striper fishing Whitney. Saturday morning early, they were surfacing by the bouys out from Welch park, but I guess I wasn't throwing the right lure. We managed some under sized ones, and one 22 incher on shad. Again, thanks for the info. I'll let you know if I find that knoll.

Thanks for the info Speed Perch. Looks like I need to bring my saltwater bag with me, and find a place to buy some bigger slabs.

Not sure I've ever met you but I bet we've seen eachother before. Perhaps we should get together for some catching of the fish sometime.

I've really cut down on the trolling. Back in the day I got 3mpg trolling but now its more like .5 or less. Amazing what a 200hp oceanpro can burn at idle. Operating expense on the drift sock is much better.

Hey Guys,
Look in the tackle box and THROW BIG STUFF for BIG fish. Even with the whites you don't hook up with as many but boy the ones that can take a hook are worth it. I will be out on the lake probably saturday monring in a 20 foot pontoon with alot of custom looking rods and look like I know something. I have whites sides with kinda green or blue stripes and a wife that will outfish any of us. I normally like to get my shad at the boat ramp when I launch in the morning and then put then in a big white live well I have on the boat. I have several air pumps and use the shad keeper and they stay alive most of the day. Also if you need GOOD rods I teach outdoor ed at a high school in the area and my kids make custom rods. They are fabulous and are better than any store bought rod on the market. Stop me if you see me this weekend and I'll let you throw mine with my NEW 400 TE shimano what a dream to fish with. Looks like there will ne a small front tomorrow but the fishing ought to be great this weekend. Good luck.

Hybrids are not that easy on somerville. When you hit them in May and they are schooling with the white bass, you can catch'em. Take a 6" storms swim shad. It's too big for the small whites but the 14" and up can take it. The odds of catching keeper hybrids is much greater also. If you want to take your son to catch some hybrids though, I would take a day off during the week and go to Conroe. Somerville is an alright lake and it's only 35 miles from my house its great for a short trip. Good luck, let us know when you go back how you do.

I live about 5 miles from Lake Somerville. My son caught this 6lb Hybrid 2 weekends ago along with a several others. It's pretty easy to limit out on Hybrids if you know where to fish. However, on some days you just can't buy a bite. Thats fishing.

Here are some pics.

Take care.

He caught that fish on a chrome rattle trap close to the surface. It was caught at about 6:20 am if that tells you anything.
