I am looking to buy a LMS520c and was wondering about the speed option. Does it work off of the GPS , or does it work like a regular speedometer with a pick up tube??? How acurate is this??? Not a huge deal but I would like to know how fast my boat runs and try to calculate fuel usage. My regular pick up tube usually flips up even after replacing it with a new one and when my son is pulling me on skis I would like for him to keep it at a safe speed. Thanks for the help....
Thank's dshort

The optional water speed has a wheel that turns in proportionate to speed and is mounted on the back of the boat. GPS speed is much more accurate and nothing is exposed to be torn off.

Don't bother getting the external speed option. The GPS will show you your speed and it will be far more accurate than a mechanical device.
I was actually really impressed with mine this weekend when I used it for the first time, the speedo on the boat and the GPS were dead-on with each other. I figured the boat speedo would be slower or faster.
The only extra I had to buy for mine was the RAM mount since my console wasn't big enough for the gimble mount that comes with the 520. I did have to purchase a switch to turn off the gps antennae when not in use. I didn't bother putting one in for the main unit as the book said to. I've got mine running through the built in fuse panel since I couldn't figure out how or get to the wiring that was run from the battery to the console.

This helps out. I didn't know that the speed showed up on screen and couldn't see how an external speed device would be any better than my regular pick up tube. As always the people on this forum have been a great help.

If you are planning on buying a 520, don't forget that it requires an external antenna. The 520 is primarily designed to fit in your console, thus requiring an external antenna. If console installation is not what you had planned then take a hard look at the 522. Unless you are a deep-sea fisherman, this unit will provide you with more information than you will ever use. I have one and I love it.
