I am from the upper Florida gulf coast and about 80-90% of our inshore fishing is done with spinning tackle. From what I've heard it is about opposite in Texas. I will be moving to Houston soon, and wonder if it's necessary to abandon my "eggbeaters" and embrace you guys' style?
I prefer spinning for the sole reason, thats what I grew up on and I'm instinctively comfortable with it. What are your opinions?

spinnin will work, but baitcast is better, especially if u hook somethin big. i'll only use spinner in freshwater, but even then i use mostly baitcast.

No problem using a good saltwater spinning reel, you will get more distance with a spinning reel, but you will give up drag, most reels built specifically for saltwater perform well, I personnally have easily landed 40 in Bull Redfish with a 35 dollar spinning reel/rod combo. In my humble opinion most people that use a baitcaster are using lures and that translates from bass fisherman who want or are used to more of a finesse presentation.

I mean, the fish in Florida must be weaker than those in Texas so you have to use better gear right? Everythings bigger in Texas, so you might want to find some industrial crane just to catch bait here!

I use both..
Spinning with braid line for lead heads and plastic, casting for top waters and spoons.

Both have their advantages, use them.

The debate goes on. Spinning vs Baitcasting, Center Console vs Bass Boat, Hard Bait vs soft plastics, etc... It really boils down to whatever your application is and there will be overlap. As an example, most bass anglers will swear that only baitcasters are adequate and appropriate for soft plastics but, more and more you see at least one spinning reel in their arsenals for finnese fishing plastics, it just makes sense for the application(s).
Don't be intimadated by the die hard purists among us, go with what you have confidence in with whatever technique you are using.

At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

how does baitcasting help you with a bigger fish? their line capacity isnt that much greater is it?

thanks for all the input guys. i look forward to hearing some more opinions.
the spinning tackle i usually stick with is shimano 2500 and 4000 sizes. i feel like i have a lot more control and ability to present my offering by having my dominant (right) hand/arm controling the rod. same thing with the fight, i feel like i have more pulling power with my right arm, then just crank down with my left hand.
in either case, ill be building some new rods and getting some baitcasting reels once i get there.

Use what you like and are comfortable with. The quality reels these days are all very good. Your rod and reel combo and confidence has more to do with success than simply the reel type.

I am a flats fishermen and avid bass fishermen and on the flats I prefer spinning for two reasons. 1 I am fishing poleing or trolling staight into the wind and I mean staight .I find in those conditions I get distance and less backlash problems. The other is Quick change spools for larger fish schooling one might encounter in salt water. It makes for more rm with less rods in the boat.

I used spinning reels from about 8 to 23... I'm 25 now and have been using baitcast for a couple of years... I'd probably still be on spinning, but I got a pretty nice rod and reel for my 23 b-day and it was baitcast... I just enjoy using a baitcast now but I don't think think there's any thing wrong with spincast reels... go with what you feel comfortable using, don't worry about what we use... they both pull in fish, right?

good luck with your move...

i've used nothing but baitcast for my coast fishing, curados and calcuttas, but after being out fished due to my buddy having a cheap-o spinning reel i went and got me a shimanno 4000 stradic. i love it matched with a 7'6 rod. i free line croaker, shrimp, mullett, and it can't be beat for light tackle. but for popping corks and top water and just ease of soft plastic fishing, i will still always go for my baitcast. just remember my spinning set up is never left at the hotel.

I think that you will get a bunch of good opinions with pros and cons for each type. I use spinning because that is what I grew up with -so the key is go with what makes you comfortable, right?
