I was bit by a copperhead, spent three days in intensive care, still not afraid on any snakes.

Looks like a moccasin to me. Head shape is not a reliable method of ID, though--many non-venemous snakes have arrow-shaped heads, and others puff them out to appear as if they do when threatened. I'm a fan of snakes, but I'd say you were wise to dispatch it, if that was where your customers come in and out.

My dog goes to work with me every day and he is usually the first one out the door and ready to load up in the truck. If I had let him out right then that snake wasnt 4 feet outside the door. Could have been bye bye Luke, that would have been BAD.

Glad Luke was not hurt! My folks have a couple of stray (feral) cats that hang out around their property. I hate the darned cats, but the number of copperhead sightings has dropped to almost zero since they showed up. Might want to get yourself a guard cat!

YIKES! Good pictures. Glad you or your dog didn't get bitten! Scary that the snake was darting at you and you could see fangs.

The only venomous snake in the country that is not a pit viper is the coral snake and it does not have a diamond shaped head. But that one is easy to identify.

Bingo!!! I agree.

Hey, why dont we try not killing every snake we come across that way they will be everywhere. They can bite us, our kids, and our pets. Then we can spend hundreds of dollars going to the hospital and the vet and hope we get there in time. Just a thought.

I like how all these snake lovers get on here and rant about killing snakes. The harmless variety is one thing. They actually do us good. The venomous ones are a different story. Cant tell the difference?? Neither can I. Kill now, ask questions later.

Not many snakes will come toward you when threatened,
That nasty moccasin will....
Where in Carrollton? I'm at Kelly / 190.
NEXT TO A CREEK! Saw a coyote on my driveway last week.

We have a few nice packs of coyotes here. They sing to us at night.

Have a pack across the street in the undevolped area.

Please quote the responses that fit your description. It appears to me that, aside from Placid's teasing, everyone said moccasin, better safe than sorry. Arguing about it is such a habit for some of us that it starts before an opponent even shows up. rolfmao

BTW, you not only can but should learn the difference--not to spare the snake, but for your own protection. Everyone should. thumb

Same here. I see them on a very rare occasion. I used to hear them almost nightly, but development is pushing them out. Kind of sad--I enjoyed their howling.
