The pump you keep mentioning can be found at Cabela's for like 8 buck I think. It has the screw end where you don't have to hold it just right to keep it all from running down your hand. It will screw on to your container. Might even be able to find it online and look at it on their website.

I've always used OMC lower unit lube for my older Evinrude. I tried Lubrimatic once in an emergency, but changed it back as soon as I got home from my trip.
Now, Donald...please pick John Bolton for your running mate.

Im not sure where to get them other than a marine dealer or napa auto parts may have them since they carry marine parts. From what ive heard the rings can be around the actual plug or inside the hole on the lower unit (depending on the engine). Mine are located inside the hole on my johnson 100hp

Most use the nylon gasket. Only seen the "O" rings on some late model outboards.

Your right Gary, they are the nylon gasket. I paid $1.50 for a pair of them.

I'm confused too about the nylon vs. rubber o-ring question. My motor ('88 Evinrude 48 SPL) had nylon rings on the plugs when I got it. I reused those little buggers about 10 times, I'm embarrassed to say, before they disintegrated. I ordered new ones from iboats by the part number listed the parts diagram for my motor. Darned if iboats didn't ship me *rubber* o-rings. I used those, but quickly found out they work for only 1 use. I bought a couple dozen of them, so I just replace them each time. Should I go back to the nylon? Does one fit better than the other? I gotta say the nylon did seem to keep out water better.

You should ask the previous owner when the last time he changed the impeller. A rule of thumb is to change it about every 2 years minimum or 150-200 hours in clear water. If running in muddy or sandy water a lot, change it every year. I change oil and impeller every year. A little overkill.

Basically it is what sucks the water into your unit, which ultimately cools the engine. If you have your impeller go out, you risk overheating the engine. Replacing the impeller and water pump is alot cheaper. Here is a pic of the impeller.

If you have water come out, better check or have it checked out. You have a seal leaking.
