Just find the bait fish or follow birds and toss a slab or humdinger, let it sink and then reel it up. or try a spoon and bounce it off the bottom
The worst times fishing are still better than the best time thinking about it.

depends on who you talk to --- some will tell you it is just luck if you catch a hybrid and not a sandbass. Others try to target them with larger lures.

When im trying for hybrids i usually use a long slab an acasional swim bait or a storm hot n tot. but i catch most of my hybrids at the old dam just trolling through with the hot n tot you can get a limit in about 30 minutes most of the time. I use the slabs when im fishing on the point near westlake park

Greg, what's a 'hot n tot'?

I target Hybrids. My approach usally works well when I can find the fish. I use a 1 oz. little George and cast out a good distance and let the bait sink to the bottom. This way the whites don't get a chance to get it. Once settled on the bottom, start a retrieve. The speed will be determined by the fish. So, you'll have to see what speed works. Usally though, the Hybrids are under the whites. This works well for me. Good luck!!
Tight Lines! God Bless

This is what I found for a hot n tot. Made by Storm and looks like a smaller hell bender with a rear hook instead of spinner.

thats it i use the chrome color with blue stripes and usually if they want a bigger bait i switch over to the super tot whichis twice the size. these baits are mainly for walleye up north but they seem to work on these hybrids im just trolling them behind my boat at an idle speed.

Interesting. I'm always seeing lots of large fish marking through there, but rarely catch anything - may give that a whirl.

I am not a know all person but I have been known to catch a few from Time to time.It is not always a bigger bait and it is not always schooling. I agree with the other post that if you are fishing a school of White Bass the Hybrids will gather up under the whites and just catch the bait that falls.Using a 1.5 or even a 2 oz Prune picker,Tnt or other heavy slab keeps whites off and the line tight so you can feel the slab stop or get hit. sometimes the line just stops. This is the easiest way and most people know how,However I also believe that the hybrid has a tendency to relate to structure, channels and depth changes where they can get a easy meal. Certain times of the year they go after shad up close to the bank when the water is still cool and most important the shad are starting to move in or other fish to spawn. At cedar creek they catch them in the lights early in the spring when the bait comes up close to warm up!Shad do not like really cold or hot water just right.Think about how much harder it is to catch bait in the middle of summer!
During the early stages of this they will hit bass lures, sassys, and alot of times small baits ,swin baits like the 2 inch or less variety,Match the bait so to speak.
once the water warms I have found that points, humps, drop offs, and timber that relate to a deeper creek or channel holds them. This is why you here of areas around the old dam.lots of timber ,humps and deeper channels. This is also why they somwtimes show up around twin poles. but as the water warms I have found that the timber becomes a bigger issue and they get real close to the timber and channel and big live baits make a difference.they are harder to catch in quantity in the summer sometimes,I like to fish for them in the winter. They seem to like the 55% water much like a striper. Some of the best days I have had have been when it is very cold. Anyway thats my 2 cents and hope it helps.
Best thing to do is put in the time and pay the price or hire a guide like Anacosta Mike I think is right he knows the program. If you really want to learn to catch them this is by far the most cost effective way.I am speaking from personal experience on this!

I would agree on the guide part. Went out last year with Boston Bob. We had five different doubles with hybrids. Well worth the money. One good tip. TNT slabs and Flies by night flies! Good luck

To each his(or her) own but I wouldn't recommend fishing for hybrids with slabs and flies--you'll end up breaking off if you catch any big daddies--JMHO

Ensign, the slab/fly rig works well for hybrids as long as you have 20#-25# line. Has worked for me a number of times.
