i need some advice i just spent a ton of money getting new upper engine mounts and the lower unit resealed. come to find out that i have problem with the lower going into reverse the outboard mechanic said it was a clutch dog and gear slipping makes since to me so i asked how much ? cost effictive would be to rebuild it with a after market gear set 1000.00 to have it rebuilt is there a cheaper way all i need is the reverse clutch dog and a gear anybody out there with one laying around LOL. it is for a 91 175 johnson v6 thx,

i dont know how he can tell you that without inspecting the parts , how do you know its not just out of adjustment, and they dont slip they jump if the lugs are rounded off, id get another opinion, by the way theres only one clutch dog and i would stay with oem parts

i had lower resealed at another shop he said everything was fine with the lower. reverse would jump in and out still. shop told me that they resealed it thats it. after a 600.00 bill + a shift cable that i did not need i went to a diffrent shop. i had them replace the upper mounts because they where broke and it was putting the shift rod in a bind so i thought that was my problem.engine mounts new shift rod adj to oem specs and a few ods and ends bill was close to a grand and still the reverse no worky. same shop told me that the teeth are rounded on the dog causeing to come in and out.iam just tired of it. throwing another grand at it would suck. thx for any help guys....,matt

Drop the lower cowling off so you can get to top of the shift shaft, take the aluminum connector off, rotate shift shaft counter-clockwise 2 rounds. Now push rod down while rotating prop, should go into reverse, leave it their. Take shift cable loose at linkage. Re assemble shift shaft and connector, put control into reverse, adjust cable to line up on linkage and assemble. Try at control for forward, neutral and reverse with someone rotating the prop. May take some fine cable adjustment. If this does`nt help, you need shift dog and gears. Cost around 600.00 installed
