I work for a generator repair company that deal with marine generators and one thing i can tell you about boat owners is that they are CHEAP!!!! Here they are riding around in a boat that in most cases cost more than the house i live in....
I can't tell you how many times a day i get calls for parts that cost a whole heck alot cheaper than any tank of deisel they put in those things and all i hear from them is "OMG"!!!

Yep, we had a few things stolen there last month....I'm not sure if these areas have city police or if they are patrolled by the sheriff's office.......but security would be a good thing....maybe a few marinas in the same area could hire some off-duty officers to patrol the area after night fall....

the idiots that bust into boats and rv's at fork are hard to understand for sure...crack heads most of them.
I walked into the Star Mart last Wednesday morning to find the new owner sweeping up the glass from his busted out front window. Some idiots busted in to steal the quarters out of the little quarter game machine he had in the store....nothing else...they got 50 bucks...cost him a thousand.
We all need to help each other by keeping an eye out and turning these idiots on their ear. Maybe catch um and drag um behind the truck for a few miles.
Good luck with trying to help keep things secure...for me, I keep my boat in a storage unit every night and still wonder if I will find my rods missing!
Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

I wont be back until next year....U need to come up with some type of presentation that you could offer the area marinas to see if they would be willing to split the costs...You would need at least a semi-marked car to show that you were security, that would help with the deterrence part of it when driving around....

I think it would be great if the local marinas would agree to it.

Theft happens everyday in cities were policemen patrol regularly. It even happens in stores on camera and that don't stop them either!
It may detour an average crook, but one doped up don't care. Marked cars makes it easier to keep track of and cell phones make great early warning devices. Coast is clear, he's still patrolling the east arm while the thief or thieves are working the west arm.
I have never had anything stolen, knock on wood, but I also unload the boat.
Its the Lazy who get robbed short and simple. Word of advice, Unloading and locking your boxes will still get your boat damaged. I leave mine unlocked and unloaded. No problems. Takes 5 minutes to reload the boat. Pain in the butt, but worth it.
Security would be nice, but when you consider Fork averages over 30 million a year in revenues for surrounding counties, maybe its time for the owners to demand the services they already pay for through their high taxes.

Yes, I'm well aware that thefts happen everyday.....been there done that for 20 plus years chasing them....I'm not well versed in the law enforcement staffing around lake fork but if it's anything like Missouri, its well understaffed!!! No one can every put a number on the amount of crimes that a marked car has done in theft detterence, but I'm sure it's detterred A LOT more crime then dopers monitoring where they are at and hitting some place else!!! I do think the area marinas should band together and take some ownership of this problem...whether its getting a security company or approaching their county commission and see what gives.......

Man, this is a tough issue. Look at what a security officer is going to charge. Especially if you have to outsource it through a security company.
Then look at what the marina or resort makes, and their overall net profits. One full time, 3rd shift guy is oging to cost $15-25 an hour. 15 if hired outright, and $25 if through an agency. You multiply that by 40 hrs a week, and all the sudden with taxes and other cost, you are looking at $70,000 per year added expenses for 1 person.
Add that back into costs, and how much will the average fisherman pay?
Especially if they just take the time to unload their boat, leave the boat unlocked so if it get's opened they don't break anything. But people keep taking risks, leaving tackle in their boats, and when it is stolen, they are suprises.
Unfortunately, tackle around the Lake Fork area is a gold mine!

What about getting a security system that you could monitor cameras for each marina at a central location. Being a police officer or former police officer the person watching should be able to notice supicious activity and then respond to that marina. It would should cut the cost. Each marina would post that they are monitored by XYZ company and armed patrol would respond in the event of suspicious activity.
