i recently got back from the devils river and let me tell you if your not a strong endurance paddler well id say that this river is not for you then. water was cool about 65 deg. we launched at bakers crossing and made camp at the Devil's River SNA about 15.7 miles down river. after the SNA (state natural area) it was onto Dolan falls. 12' waterfall. it was awesome! highly recommend the trip. total distance was 23.7 miles, pack light!

yeah i got to fish the whole time. we caught a total of 6 smallmouth bass. we were paddling for the most part though. this is what you call a pool and drop river so it "pools"like a lake or flat water, then drops usually very steep like a waterfall or class II - III rapids. go to www.devilsriveroutfitters.com to see what i mean about Dolan Falls. that waterfall is severe. we had to port our kayaks to the left and lower them back in the river b/c the guides say DO NOT RUN DOLAN FALLS!!!. anyways you will appreciate the pics there. the devils river is out west near Del Rio, Tx. It feeds into Lake Amistad.

kayakjunkie,

Did you use an outfitter to drop you off and pick you up? If so, do you mind sharing a ballpark cost?

Thank you

sorry about the website its www.expedition-outfitters.net and yes i used Gerald Bailey he runs the show there. for him to take 4 of us it was $250 and then when you get to Baker's Crossing you pay another $10. Look at the photos of dolan falls on this website. you won't believe your eyes. Awesome trip, awesome time!!! can't wait to go back. startd at 3:00am from san antonio got to 277-90 junction at 7:00am in del rio, tx then we followed him to baker's. he dropped us off then took our truck to his place. we went down the river 15 miles then camped(sorry only tents) then woke up at 7:00am and paddled 10 miles roughly. got to his house on the river at 2:30pm. i'd say a ballpark cost for the whole trip food, gas, outfitter, launch all in all $350-400. but you have to remember its a once in a lifetime trip!!!

Awesome trip. I hope to do it someday. I've got to drop that 75lb keg I'm toting around before I can do it though. I'm tired now just from typing smile

Rough and beautiful, done it twice, can't wait to do it again. I broke my padlle about a mile and a half into my last trip. Made for a tough trip!

Hey Kayakjunkie,
That link does not work... Thanks for the explanation, though.

Best Regards,

Gray

Hey Gents, I'm new to the forum here. Thanks for having me.

I just acquired some acreage in Loma Alta on Dolan Creek Rd. The property is 10 miles from SNA park entrance. There's a 2000 sf metal building on it with electricity and water. The place would be a perfect camp spot for a group to use for a Friday or Saturday overnight and put in at SNA. Or just fish/hunt and camp. You'd need a driver to get you to and from the park entrance.

Rustic camping + seasonal wing (only) hunting is available now. The grounds are being renovated this fall and we hope to be working with an outfitter this Spring 2011 offering weekend transport services to and from SNA. Prices will be very affordable but no clowns please. Please be serious anglers/hunters/paddlers. We are seeking conservation minded guests.

PM if interested.

we camped at the 9 mile point and then night #2 was at the SNA. Doing 15 miles in one day is nuts. Not fun that way

If you are planning to do that, just stay at the SNA. You'll be right on the water that way.
