I have a boathouse on RC. The ceiling is open inside and its a great place for hornets, birds etc. to make nests. It's a pain to cover the boat every time I come back to the house but if I don't, I end up with droppings all over the white interior.
I'm debating on whether to put some plywood on the rafters and close off the ceiling. What do you other guys do in your boathouse?

I had a lot of trouble with birds last year. I put up a big plastic owl and it became the birds best buddy. No help at all. Then I went to the dollar store and bought some shiny pinwheels (kids toys) and put them over my boat. They actually work. The birds wouldn't light over the boat. It's still working this year. The birds are back, but the boat's staying clean. Now if anyone has any ideas how to keep spiders out of a boathouse, I'm all ears.

I spray my boathouse with a product that is advertised for termites you can get at the hardware store. If you read the label it gives directions for spiders and wasps. One spraying in the spring and spiders stay away all year. Wsps don't build thier nests but they still hover around the rafters. I don't remember the name because I keep the bottle at the boathouse and I live in Dallas.

Try putting rubber snakes in the rafters or around where the birds are building their nests. It has worked for me in the past.

Spiders were a more concern to me than the birds were, i put in a dusk to dawn photo cell and put 2 box fans in the attic of my boat house and also turned off my big outside light and put a beaconing amber flashing light, spiders don;t like a breeze of any thing and most birds won;t roost there either, just my 2 cents worth but i now have clean boats and no spiders hardly at all to contend with,

Don't have a boathouse but have dealt with birds with chicken wire up in the rafter area, make a false ceiling with it. As for spiders, leave the wasps alone and they will take care of the spiders.

I've heard this may work spider. Put moth balls in a ladies' knee high and hang it in the center of the boat. It's supposed to keep them away.
I'm going to give it a try on my deer stands this year.
That's why they call it fishing and not catching!
