How long does it take to sour range cubes and do you just pour in lake or drill holes in a bucket or I guess just how to use them? Sorry for the ignorance but im new to fresh water. Thanks : Scott

The range cubes i use comes in 50lb. sacks and costs about $8.00. The cubes are round and are about 3 in. long, which I usually break in half. Some of them I also drill a hole in them to use as bait also. If i try and throw very many of them to where I am fishing at, my shoulder will hurt for a week. lol So to get around this I already had a sling shot I use for snakes and any critters trying to get my fish at nighttime and i then shoot the range cubes to where I am going to be using my poles at. I do that first thing before I do anything, so they have a little bit of a head start on attracting the cats. Usually they take about 20 min. You might take one and put it in water at home and see how long it takes to give you a good idea.

I can answer the desolve rate. I put a handfull in a bucket of lake water, within a minute or so I had flakes of them in the water in about 25 minutes they were totally desolved.
Looked like a pretty even process.

I like soured milo or wheat better than the cubes. Not saying the cubes don't help but you attract a lot of other species also such as carp and buffalo. The soured wheat and milo are a bit quicker acting also. This said I often have range cubes on board and use them sparingly.

I agree with you rickt on soured milo and wheat is better. But I live in an apt. complex and don't think I could get by for very long having it smelling up the area on my patio without getting into trouble. Otherwise i would.

If you do it in a trash can with the usual tight fitting cover the odor isn't too bad except when you transfersome to your 5 gallon bucket. Even a 5 gallon bucket full with the lid on isn't a real odor maker. Then again I make punch bait and I might not be all that sensitive.

I used to live in an Apartment and made the Sour Milo in a 5 Gallon bucket. Noone ever knew. Just don't leave the lid off or fully attached either.
I used to use a Beer Firmenting bucket to do the souring in, with a firmenting stop in the lid to keep the bucket from blowing up.

I make throwers out of pvc pipe and can chunk several at a time as far as I want. They are easy to make. The pins allow me to set it for different numbers of range cubes.
If you don't know where you are going, don't be surprised if you don't get there.

some folks use a modified potato gun, but dont get caught using it. They will chum a 100x100' area with one shot

I just use a slotted spoon and I can wing 'em pretty good. The only drawback is that you can only put a few in at a time.
Keep 'dem lines tight and enjoy the fight....!

That is a great idea. Thank you for that info. But was wondering on the distance. It said short and long. How far out is the short distance and how far out is the long distance.
