Hi all,

I’m pretty new to the forum and boating as well. I’ve always loved to fish and recently bought a 10.3 Basstender from a seller on Craigs list. The boat came with a trailer (Karavan) and has 4.80 x 8 tires. From what I understand, a larger tire is better (less heat buildup, etc.)

I am thinking about putting 4.80 x 12 tires on the trailer. Based on the height of the fenders, it looks like it would be possible. I haven’t even been able to take it out yet so I don’t know what it feels like with the 8 inch tires.

I won’t be taking long trips. I live in Richardson and will be going to places like Fork, Texoma, Purtis, and of course lakes in the metromess area.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have that size on a trailer I use for a jon boat. I thought about doing it too. I fish several ponds and small lakes that have no ramp. I decided the larger size wheels would make it more difficult to launch in shallow areas. I already have to back in to the front wheels some places. Keep the bearings maintained (repacked) at least once a year and install Bearing Buddy type covers instead of dust caps. Hit them with grease every month or two and they should be fine.

Thanks for your reply mutantslinger. I had not thought about the issue of smaller tires being easier to launch in shallow areas.
