Should a 14' Jon w' a 9hp evenrude plane out? It seems like it should give me more but maybe thats all it has. It does die on idle when not choked.

It should plane that boat. It shouldn't die on idle when not choked. Rebuild your carb. Distribute weight evenly.

well. honestly i've NEVER seen a 9hp motor plane out a 14' jon boat. they just "plow" the water, cause the props are too small to offer LIFT.

I ran a 6 rude on 14' jonboats all over the state of Louisiana, and they planed out fine, just like in the video.........now, if it's a deep V, you might get a different answer. I remember now it did fail to plane a 15' fiberglass boat.

Notice in the video, the battery is up front...I used to put the fuel tank there....weight distribution is crucial in a small boat.

I have a 14' wide one with a 8hp Evinrude 4 stroke; PLANES FINE with me and my small son.

The carbs don't have much adjustment on these small motors. I cleaned mine when it had this trouble, put a kit in it and 'tinkered' with the screws a bit. But, THERE IS VERY LITTLE TOLERANCE on adjustments of these little carbs. I think that may be why they added an idle adjustment on the tiller.....IMHO

If the tank vent isn't open, the fuel pump is pulling against a vacuum, which it isn't designed to do.
