i just hold it pretty still, and if you're in the right zone then they'll go for it

pretty much it

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

Stop it it every 12 inches for a moment or two. If you get bit, mark your line with a Sharpie or what I like to do is put a piece of electrical tape across the spool to repeat that depth.

Once you find the depth as stated then you can figure out how much movement is needed. I like you drop my rod tip in a short quick motion. Some people raise theirs. i will also flip the jigs out and let them float back into position for fish that will hit the jig on the way down.

Crappie fishing other then the spawn is about depth and structure. A good fish finder is very helpful in locating structure, finding fish and determining depth. Vertical jigging works best on crappie because they usually won't pursue a fast moving lure nor go too far from whatever structure they are holding on. One advantage to the fisherman is that crappie seldom live alone so if you catch one there is usually more to be caught. The trick is to put the jig right on their nose then you will get fish!

When I was a boy my uncle taught me to slow jig minnows. The patience was painful to learn for a lad such as myself. Then one summer at PK State Park I was penniless and no bait. So I walked around to all the other anglers and begged their deceased minnows. Then, styrofoam cup of dead minnows in hand I proceeded to slow jig . Pretty soon I had quite a stringer and some unhappy folks who had earlier generously handed out dead bait. I'd forgotten all about that until right this minute.
