I went to A&M, and we spent our time on the water out at Lake Bryan. This lake is flat loaded with good fish. Throw a white tube rigged on a 1/4 jighead w/ weedguard and a medium diving crankbait in a shad pattern and hold on. Fish the riprap mostly, but right now they are probably on beds. Find some reeds and they will be there (shallow). I know that they allow skiers out there now, but the fishing should be worth the frustration.

Timberlake, does Lake Bryan have lots of bass? The lake record is listed as less than 8 pound bass. So does it make up for the lack of size by sheer number of fish?

When the crappie are running, they are descent near the bridge at Lake Bryan. Other than that, it's not the best lake in the world for fishing. In my opinion, Somerville and Gibbons are worth the drive and produce better fish.

I was thinking about going out to Gibbons this weekend. I'll repost if I have any luck out there and where they hit.

Not anymore it ain't and the jet set runs the lake.. It is a very tough fish now and has been for the last few years.. The lake is not being managed for fishing it is a outdoor recreation lake with lots of loud music, beer , jetskis and ski boats. If your going to fish it do so in the early am weekdays because it's a zoo otherwise... Right now the crappie are spawning and can be caught shallow but I haven't found the bass yet. Timberlake is correct about working the rocks with a crank but it has become hit or miss (mostly miss ) over the last few years..

Somerville is a blast when the white bass are running. Seine up some ghost minnows and shad along the banks and go to town. You can also walks the creeks that feed Somerville. Stop at the Country Inn in Somerville for lunch or dinner.

If it's not too crowded, you can get some nice whites and hybrids when the dam is releasing water.

I also had access to some private tanks when living there, with some nice bass. Scope things out on Google Earth and ask permission to fish, it can't hurt.

If you're new to the area, always watch for fire ants and watch where you plant your feet.

If you want White bass or crappie, Sommerville is your best bet hands down. When those sandies run, it can be an absolute blast.
Just get you a little cocahoe minnow and some little George's and go to town. They will also hammer a top water when they are busting.

I fished Gibbons quite a bit in college, and had some decent success. It can be extremely hit or miss.

Now I fish fayette at least a couple times a week.
Fayette is the best all around bass lake in the area, in my opinion. You can catch great numbers but also have a chance at some big ones. Fayette is a little bit of a drive, but man it can be a blast.

On fayette or Gibbons, always try the intake. Also, the rip rap is producing fish right now. But I have my best luck in the grass beds throwing Texas Rigged Worms. Don't be afraid to C-Rig main points, as they will always hold some good fish.

Also, Conroe is an outstanding bass fishery. It can be a little bit intimidating if you don't know where to go, but if you take time to fish it, you can definitely catch a hawg.

Oh, and Lake Bryan has completely hit the skids in the last few years. Its a party lake. While I was in college I fished there quite a bit and had marginal success. I would choose one of the other lakes around the area.

Catfishing at Gibbons is good, especially below the dam when there is a current and at the hot water discharge in winter. I have heard the crappie are there too, but haven't fished for them. Fishing for bass is the most exasperating for me...have spent quite a few days fishing for bass with nothing to show for it.

I agree that Somerville is the best bet in the immediate B/CS area. White bass under the birds is a blast.

I'd say the thirty largemouth we caught today at Gibbon's Creek was worth the short 25 minute drive.

Fishing's ALWAYS good, It's the catching that varies!!
