There are several powders & granules on the market to keep snakes away that do not harm them. Check local Tractor Supply or other farm stores.

yea the granules/powders may sometimes help but beware they work only on the poionous snakes that happen to be in the pit viper group.

"""It is really easy to mistake a northern water snake or a banded water snake for moccasins, they look alot alike, not really common to see moccasins. """

So so true.
The reason I asked is because they are so commonly mistaken as water moccasins when they're actually just a water snake.
I've seen way to many snakes killed and have someone come up to me only to say "look at this moccasin I took out".. only for it to be a watersnake...

99% of snakes in north American are not going to chase you down. You stay out of their way, and they'll stay out of yours. They do more for you and the enviroment than most think.
Most people who get bit by them are people like me who go out and try to "study" them.

Alot of people come up to me with a dead water snake and say look at this moccasin and when i tell them, they say they never heard of water snakes. You're right about snakes not chasin, but I've made plenty of water moccasins mad enough to chase me. It wasnt a very fun ordeal. I like to go "study" them too, so I know how that is, get way too close, way too often.

Moccasins are one of the more aggressive snakes around here and the only reason they would is if your really antagonizing them or they've just had a really bad day. Just stay away if you don't like em. It's that simple.

I keep 6 snakes and have kept venomous. The last thing they want to do is bite you. But if you leave them no other choice, thats the defense they have.

true. the times they came after me were when i was clearing thick brush and came up on em with a machete. they'd strike, i'd take a swing at em, and it would go back and forth until i killed it.

Well somethin' brushed my leg in the water in a high vegetation area. I don't know if it was a snake or a fish. I got the heck out of their boy.......and in a hurry. I don't care if I scared fish. Not many big fish will hit you on the inside of the leg like that, they will avoid you. It was not a bream, it was MUCH bigger. So out I went and poste haste as they say. :-)
