I think it is great you offer the opportunity on here, to people who fish. I wish more business owners would see the wisdom in hiring people who have a hobby in their business. Well it is good to train some folks who don't have a clue too I guess. But for customers...we prefer experience to our questions instead of the deer in the headlight look....... :-)

Good point....I'd like to see some self study done by those same employees. I was in the fly shop BPS G'vine. The young man there had good basic knowledge on freshwater but he was at a total loss where it came to saltwater fly fishing.

Well BPS tries to hire folks with a good knowledge of the sport. There have been, however , when I get the "deer in headlights look". That's mostly when they're talking about fishing Patagonia or New Zealand...er any uv them thar foriegn countries...like New York bolt

Nah, it was many many years ago. Don't get me wrong, he was a nice young man, and he handled up well enough with any freshwater questions. Just didn't have a lot of knowledge about fishing the salt. He could of been brand new to the job or never had the oppurtunity to fish the coast. For all I know, he could have been filling in from another department.

I wonder if BPS offers some kind of continuing education for it's employees?

Just curious, I work over there part time a couple of days during the week and give casting classes on the weekends.
To answer your question, I believe when the store first opened it was a requirement but not now. With that being said, between the 5 employees we now have in the shop we have over a hundred years of experience in flyfishing.

Some on the job training in salt water fly fishing would be alright as a perk! wink
