My 200 Yamaha smokes for about 2 to 3 minutes when it's first started. Seems to be alittle more than normal. Runs great and doesn't smoke unless it sits for a while (fishing)The it will blow just a little smoke when you fire it up. You can kill it and start it no smoke. Only if it off for more than 30 to 45 minutes

Mine does the same thing. It is a 225. Looked at my plugs. Going to change them to see it that helps.

Is this a 2 cycle or 4 cycle? yes my question also. if it is a carbed engine it could me that the gas is evaporating and leaving the carb and cylinders and it is the oil left in the carb and in the cylinders.
Justin 63lb, 2 58lb, several 40's, 38lb, and several 20lb yellas.

All 2 strokes smoke. Some more than others; newer less than older models. If it is a 2 stroke and it doesn't smoke a bit, that would be cause for serious concern. 2 strokes will always have a bit of fuel pooling in the cylinders when allowed to sit for any length ot time, even on current year models. If it is a 4 stroke I would be concerned.

I have a Yamaha OX66 200 and it smoke a little too when warming up. No concern. My plugs are changed every year, but that can help a little if yours are old.

Do you pre mix your oil/gas, or is it oil injected? Is it carbed or fuel injected?

I have a 1992 200 V-MAX, Mine smokes more or less to what kind of oil I run. If I run the YAMALUBE it smokes less than with PENNZOIL or other less expensive oils. I also go through 2 sets of plugs a season. It smokes like you say for about 2 minutes and dissapates. I asked Sartin Marine about the plug fouling problem and he said he could lean the oil out, but I think that plugs are cheaper than pistons so I didn't persue that option.

Yellowcat is right, its just that some of the gas that has been in the float has just evaporated leaving you with slightly less gas to oil ratio

I don't think 30 to 45 minutes is long enough for gas to evaporate from the float bowl, especially in cooler weather, but I guess it is possible.

Smoking is normal at 1st start cold. Not because of fuel evaporating from the carbs but more from residual oil in the crankcase and pooling in the intake. Most injection systems in Yamaha's are injected behind the carbs. Better oils will decrease the amount of smoke. As was stated earlier I'd be way more worried if the motor stopped smoking...

My carbed Yammi smokes on the start.
When I had a hole in the fuel pump diaphragm it would smoke at idle and dog-out at the top end. I'm not an outboard mechanic but my description of the fuel pump diaphragm is that it used a piston cycle as the mechanism for pumping and if there is a hole in it fuel will dump into the cylinder. There's your smoke.
I replaced the diaphragm and she runs great only smoking at first start.
Stress less, relax more. Go fishing.
