I found an oil leak today after I got home from the lake. ITs an 89 johnson 175. what and where is this leaking from, its not milky so I dont think its mixed with water. Im sure its just a seal, but is this something one can do on his own, or should I take it to a mechanic? any ideas on cost? Thanks!!! Never mind, just had a mechanic look at it, its an o ring or seal on the shifting rod that is worn out, not a big deal, just in a bad spot so its going to be like 4-500 because they have to drop the lower unit, there goes my vacation I had planned next week! oh well, at least its not replacing the lower unit!

Have you been trolling with the big motor alot lately, I had a Johnson GT 150 on an older boats and when I would do a lot of trolling for sandies etc. It would leak like that. But after running for a few days it would clear up.

That's way too much. Its a $1 o ring and 2 hours work. Bring it to me and I'll do it for $155. Seriously, get another opinion. In the meantime, just check your fluid after each trip and make sure you have clean fluid. You could do that for quite a while.

bass art, he told me it would be 200 if it was just that o ring, and 4-500 if they had to replace all of those seals. The only reason he said it would be so much was because they would have to take the lower unit apart.

If dallas wasnt so far away I would bring it to you! But unfortunatly there are not too many boat dealers here in Killeen. They seem like an honest place. I just wish I had the guts to start to tear into it myself.

Mikey, just bought the boat, It was only leaking a very slight bit a few days ago, and when I got home today there was a good sized puddle on the ground after sitting for just an hour. How much did yours leak?

If you are just a little mechanically inclined you can do it yourself, buy the good shop repair manual for your year model and then get r done.

Changing the seal on the shift shaft is no big deal. You can probably get a factory service manual on CD on eBay for $10. Print out the pages you need and taike it slow. It's a good idea to take pics with a digital camera as you go.
