So i've been usin my 6' Bass Pro Extreme Rod and Reel combo for all my bank fishin for blacks... there will be times when i cast as far as possible to the opposite bank and a fish will grab it... and im not kiddin probably about 50% of the time i try to set the hook i miss! i've been fishin a long time but i was thinkin about it today... maybe if i go with a longer Rod the hookup will pack a little more punch than with the rod im usin now... your feedback is very much app.

Thanks!

Thats true man you should go to a longer rod and find one that you like I know the combo you are talking about the reels are great on them but I'm not the biggest fan of the rods they have with them.

What kind of line are you using? At that distance there would be quite a bit of flex in mono I would think.

And what's the action of the rod? Medium, Medium Heavy?

Is this a baitcast or spinning rod?

I agree with Bigg Poppa -

With all the flex in mono, there may be a little delay in the time from you applying the hookset and the reaction actually making it to the lure.

I fish with several different rod lengths/actions but for bass I use a 7 ft medium or medium/heavy (depending on the lure).
I have a couple of 6 ft and 6 1/2 ft rods but they are mostly just "loaner's" for someone else to use.

I think the trick is to get the slack out as fast as possible no matter what rod length. It only takes a fraction of a second for a fish to figure out the lure isn't real and spit it out. Time and distance play a role in hook-set as does line stretch, reduce any of these and hook-sets get better.. There probably isn't much you can change equipment-wise that will help but maybe a slight change in technique is the answer.. If you are right handed and cast and reel with your right hand then the time it takes to switch hands might be the only change you can make to get on the line faster.. I use open face spinning gear so I never change hands and don't think I'm missing hook sets quite as often because of it.

i was just telling a friend just yesterday that i thought that the bass had tougher mouths this year . lately its been hard to drive the hook home.the last couple of weeks i have set the hook on them and started to bring them in only to have them spit the hook out . these have been on plastic worms . its been a while since i hooked one on spinner baits tho . better days will be coming im sure when the fish get more aggresive

ya they weren't aggressive at all today! fished one of our better ponds today and the only fish caught was on the last cast of the day by adam about 5 feet off the bank into some roots! pulled a solid six out of em!
