just bought me a new malibu mini-x kayak. took it out for the first time today and had a blast. one question though. is water suppose to get inside of the yak. i pulled the plug after getting home and it had water inside the hull. i am new to kayaks so this may be normal. if its not should i send it back? thanks

there shouldn't be any water inside the hull. did you have all your hatches closed. And yes if its taking on water and its new I would take it back.

water from the outside should not be getting in, however... it is semi-normal (especially with yesterday's temps) to get condensation inside the hull, and there can be quite a bit. It's your call, if it looks like it was a leak (significant amount of water sloshing around) or condensation (just enough to notice, but doesn't cover the bottom of the hull). Ask your dealer before you take it out again regardless.

Did you get any water over any of your lids? There simply are no waterproof hatch lids out there that I know of. They all leak to some degree when they get water on them. You may also check all of the places on your yak where anything might have been riveted or screwed in. Sometimes the factory won't put enough or any silicone in those places. Where did you get your yak from? I was thinking of buying the wife a mini-x.

If you live in Denton, we should get together sometime and fish North Lakes or hit one of the creeks around here.

Later,
James

SOME water will get into every kayak...there is a drain plug for a reason. It just depends on how much you are getting because manufacturer defects are not uncommon, especially in the scuppers. You have a lifetime warranty on defects so if it is an abnormal amount of water/condensation, no worries. If you got it from Austin Canoe and Kayak then you have nothing to worry about they will take care of you.

Fill it with water and see where it leaks out. Probably the same spot it gets in.
