Does anyone know how the fishing is at Vance's camp? Last I heard it wasn't so hot due to dam construction.

Thanks.

I guess I'll give the report for others who are interested: We went to Vance's camp, upstream from the "Nature Center" and fished downstream until about lunch time. Fishing was slow. We caught a a couple of small crappie out of the brush piles, and a seemingly lost sand bass. The afternoon was spent tied up to the "no boats beyond this point cable" at the Eagle Mountain Lake spill way. We finally bagged a small stringer of sandies. Two were loaded with eggs and decent size; the rest were small males. Most of the fish were caught on small jigs, no particular color worked better than another, but white and chartreuse both produced fish. Some were also caught on rooster tails. I'd say my partner and I landed somewhere around 20 fish, but only 7 were over 10". Very enjoyable fishing spot, look forward to trying it again soon. Hopefully they will pick up the pace between now and then.

Vance's Camp is on the south end of Eagle Mtn below the dam. If you look on Google Earth, Vance's Camp is due north of the intersection of Ten Mile Bridge and Robertson roads. Don't know if you can wade, but a canoe would be perfect(there is a boat ramp). Just disregard all of the trash.

Thanks MBradford! Would you recommend going up stream from Vance's camp or down stream? Thanks for the info.

I'd say the creek (actually, it's the Trinity River) is about 15-20 yards wide on average. Not sure about the depth as I have never been on the river in a boat with a depthfinder. It's been sevveral years since I've been there.

You can go to http://maps.live.com/ and zoom in on the area, and click on bird's eye to get a detailed aerial photo. That should give you some idea how the area looks.

That section of the river is great for canoing. I think there is some sort of Kayak club that floats it frequently. From what I hear, they use the Nature Center to launch. I saw several people fishing from the bank. There is a trail that will take you all the way up to the "forbidden zone" at the dam spillway. I'm new to the spot as well, but a friend of mine passed that info on. There may even be a small charge to access that trail at Vance's camp headquarters, which is actually a house that belongs in that movie "Deliverance."
You can get an idea of how wide the water is from this picture.

Can you eat the fish out of there? I thought there was a ban on Lake Worth?

I don't know anything about that. Would a Lake Worth ban affect eating fish out of there?

I found a list on the TP&W web. This is the only thing I saw that would make me wonder, but I don't think it is an issue at the Vance's Camp area.

Trinity River from the 7th Street Bridge in Fort Worth, downstream to the Texas 34 Bridge in Kaufman and Ellis Counties southeast of Dallas

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like the weather may cooperate tomorrow so I may put the canoe on the water. Is there a boat launch of some sorts there? I saw the entrance into Vance's Camp on a map. Is the launch down from that?

yea, there a few place that would be adequate for launching a canoe. There is also a small fee to use the launch. I'm not sure who all the fee applies to, but I would check it out. It cost us 4 per person to put a boat in. It will be obvious where to go when you arrive.
