By mud cat do you mean flathead? It is illegal to use game fish as bait unless you are using it in your own pond or other private water.

Where punters are punted.

Muscat and flathead are not the same. Mudcat is an oily, nasty tasting fish. Normally found in farm tank. Bryan

if so, they make great flathead bait fished live. as for cut bait, I dont know from personal experience, but I dont see why it wouldnt work...I don't know of any fish that DOESNT work as cut bait. give it a try and tell us how it worked! good luck!

they make terrible cut bait for some reason. The only kind of cut bait that has worked worse than them for me is cut Gasper-Goo. Both work really well alive for yella cats but if dead will rot off the hook instead of getting eaten.
Catch those mudcats(aka polliwogs;bullheads) in a big perch trap and bait a trotline with them.

Would someone post a picture, or tell me where to find one, so that I don't get this bullhead/mudcat mixed up with a small catfish. I'd like to try them on a trot line at Ivie.

Ditto on what Novato above said
If you mean Yellow Bullhead or Black Bullhead, cut the barbs off to make'm bleed some and hook away for Flatheads if you have them any in your fishing area!

Thanks drakechaser. I think this what I use to catch in the stock ponds when I was a kid. Never did eat one, but they were fun for a kid to catch.
Now I need to catch some for my trot line. Perch trap should work.
