If they are the same exact plug, with the same gap what gives?? My 2000 merc. 225efi states that you should only use champion brand plugs...I don't get it?? I'm just wondering if somebody knows more than I do about the topic?

mmm. well my experiences say.
champions only in OMC and BRP engines NGK's in merc's and yamaha's.
I would NEVER run a champion plug in a merc. period!

yes, jay smith put in the BUHW's
i heard there was a recall on that yr engines ecu, and plug #'s and supposedly your supposed retard the timing from 25 deg. to 23 deg. in the recall merc. suggests to run the BUZHW. i know of guys running both types and can't tell a difference.
check your ecu. if you have the 824003A17 you'll need to get the new ecu p/n 824003A32
mine has the new ecu, and i run the BUHW plug. jay set my timing at 25 deg. cause the motor was "built" to run!
hope that helps ya.

Champion plugs aren't even good trotline weights.

When I changed the plugs in my Merc I was told by a good friend of mine at North Texas Marine to use only NKG plugs

I dont have any idea. Call North Texas Marine or some other boat dealer mechanic Im sure they will let you know. Dont call Autozone or any other auto parts store because they will tell you something else like they did me

I went and saw Steve at his shop before the McDonald's tourney on Fork and we started shooting the bull and that was one of the first things he asked me, what plugs I was running, he took the cover off and saw that it was champion plugs and he got a parts guy and had NGK plugs brought over.
I will say it does run a lot better....
