I am looking at a deal on a sea ark 1760 excellent shape 2001 but it has a 1983 mariner 80 hp outboard with a bad cylinder. The gentleman said it would cost about 1K-1.5k to fix. I would just junk the motor and get something else. He said the motor looked great, paint wise and all. My question is, what could I get for the motor to offset the cost of the boat? Worth anything?

May check with boat shops to get a price range for repairs.

You might be able to get a few hundred dollars for the lower unit and a little for the ignition system and other parts. I would say if you get $300 or so, you have done well.
If you want the boat, I would price the repairs and price a new motor. The newer motor will be considerably more. I would then take the value of the boat (NADA) and subtract something between the repair costs and a new motor cost. Most likely, you will find that the boat is worth very little.

Yes even with the 80hp fixed the boat would`nt be worth near what it would with a 2000 or newer outboard. You have to work off of value of boat for what you can spend on a motor. I would bet the owner has done this and it wo`nt work because boats are not bringing NADA prices. More like trade-in. Lot of real good deals on boats right now that need nothing. Just to give you an idea, 2001 17.5 Tracker real clean with warranty for 5695.00. Just look at boats for sale here. The only ones selling, that I have seen, are well under NADA. Agree with rb7764.

Ok, here's more. Thanks for the answers by the way. I was mistaken, it is a 2001 1756 xpress. I didn't figure the old motor would be worth much at all and your answers verify that. The owner is willing to take 3400. Still too much, huh?
