Does anyone know of a baitshop that sells live maggots in Central Texas? #1955165 02/08/08 04:47 PM

I'm in the Austin/Round Rock area and want to take my 3 yr old bream fishing this summer. When I was a kid we used maggots (sold as EuroLarvea) for bream fishing and there was nothing better. Has anyone seen anyplace that sells them? Is there someplace online that sells them? Seems like they lasted for months in the refridgerator.

Thanks.

I haven't seen maggots for sale online or otherwise. You might try wax worms. i think they would be effective too. I think someone said Petco sold them online. Or, just Google wax worms...I'm sure you would get a few hits that way. Btw, welcome to the forum. smile

I bought some from an online shop and was pretty happy with em. I'll see if I can find the info. But you can grow your own in a bucket. Put some high protein animal feed, range cubes, pond fish pellets, gerbil pellets or rabbit pellets in a bucket and wet em a bit. let a few flies in there and let nature takes its course. No rotting meaat but the maggots are nice and fat. Not sure about doing this in winter though.

just for experimental sake and good squeal factor for the kiddos, try crickets. You can get a cricket cage at most Walmarts, academy, etc. Very effective in my opinion.

If you have a WildBirdsUnlimited in the area, they generally stock mealworms, waxworms (critter of that nature) for the birds whose predominate food source are live worms.

Cheers!

Jeff

When I was much younger, I caught Brim for my Dad useing Maggots for our trotlines... Later on we found that taking pealed shrimp and cutting it into Maggot size pieces worked just as well if not better than Maggots, and Shrimp is a heck of alot easier to find and use.

If you try this method, go to a market to get your Shrimp. As food Shrimp is better quility and cheaper than bait shrimp you will find at a Bait Place. LOL

I've always found that to be odd. Lol. But then again, if your already at the baitshop minus shrimp, you don't have much choice.

Thanks for all the responses. I'll probably go the online route since I don't think my wife would appreciate me growing maggots in the garage. I'll be taking the kids bream fishing after the crappie spawn is over and the weather is nice and warm so I've still got some time before I need them. Thanks again for all the suggestions!
