The package weight does not include gas and any other gear you might have on the boat. I think you would be "pushing the envelope" for towing it with your outlander IMHO.
At least my boat and truck are paid for, woo hoo!

it should work but not ideal. make sure you have good tread on your tires and stay away from steep ramps, esp. in the summertime.

I think it should tow fine, my opinion though. Having a strong V-6 and as long it's a AWD version, you shouldn't have any problems at the boat ramp or towing it. My only concern is the weight of the vehicle itself. Coming to a stop may be a little hard since it is not as heavy as other SUVs. It is also not built on truck chassis like a 4runner or some of the mid-size SUVs so it will handle a little different from "truck" based SUVs. The Outlander drive train is built more like a sedan, it is more front-wheel drive than rear where the traction is most needed. If it is 4wd, I'd say no problem. 2wd, be careful at the boat ramps. Just take it slow and be careful, it should be fine.
Another thing to consider is the tongue weight. Check to see if the Outlander can handle the weight, or you will be looking at the sky as you drive!

I pull my 175 with my 95 toyota pickup. It's got the 2.4l 4 cylinder in it. It is rated for 3500 lbs though. It does ok, but you sure know you are towing something.

I had a 1986 one ton with the 2.4RE and a 5 speed. It pulled my 18 foot Ranger just fine for 240 thousand miles. When it was hot and I needed to keep the speed up going up a good grade I just switched on the afterburner.......turned off the air conditioner.

Did you have a hitch put on your 86 or did you just use the bumper? I've been debating if I want to spend the money for a hitch. I think it would make it too low as well. I do need to put some new shocks on the rear end anyway.

Jase,
I have an 88 toyota truck that i installed a hitch on and glad i did. the reason is that it will take more weight than the bumper and gives you a better turning radius because it puts it out a little further. As for the height goes, just flip the ball receiver upside down and it will bring it to the bumper height. I tow cars on my flat bed trailer all the time and would not trust my bumper.
I only paid around $100 for mine from discount hitches. Very easy to install with basic tools. Just don't buy a universal hitch. Buy a direct fit because no modifications are need to your truck.
