For the last month I have been unable to find any shad to speak of. Used to be I could scoop them up in my hands by the shore. Thousands of them practically jumping into the bait bucket. After all this rain and the lake level going up though I can't seem to find but one or two at a time here and there. Where the heck are they ???

Sidenote: There are normal shad, and then I have noticed that sometime you will catch some HUGE 8 inch or so shad that are realllllyyyyy slimy like a bluecat. What is up with these ?

I could be wrong, and if I am someone will correct me, but I believe the larger shad that you speak of are Gizzard Shad. They get to be pretty big.

Not sure where your shad are out there in the central/eastern part of the state, but out here in West Texas they are everywhere!!

Try finding shad in the back of coves and creeks this time of year. I have been getting a few around the docks, but most have been in the back coves where the water is almost muddy. Big shad = mommy and daddy????

Wiggles, you should have been on Belton this weekend. The shad were in huge baitballs, all suspended in 8-10 feet of water, in the bays, weird pattern, but made for some great hybrid fishing with Hellpet rigs! I've not seen the shad so plentiful as right now down here at Belton.

I always grew up catching tons of big shad for bait while casting, we always called the big ones bull shad.

while fishing at night, shad tend to stay about 10-15 feet below our green flurescent fishing light. When we are ready for a new live batch, we turn off the light and all the shad come to the surface. We use a cast net to catch them. One throw usually catches hundreds. Call it weird or maybe something to do with science, but it works for us.
