I'd venture to say just about every lake in Texas has a population of bowfin. Some lakes have more than others. It's hard to target only bowfin, most are caught by mistake, usually while bass fishing. They hit the same stuff bass will hit. If you decide to target them and actually catch one, please admire it and return it. They cause no more harm to their domain than bass do. Cool fish and have had many an angler thinking they just hooked the biggest bass of their lives.

Yeah, very cool fish. I'd love to catch one!
They are definitely far more common the further East you go in Texas.

They cause no more harm to their domain than bass do. Tell my $75 3:16 wake bait about that. Bowfin broke the tail off and twisted the joints so bad it won't swim straight anymore.

I fished a tournament a number of years ago on Richland-Chambers. The gentleman in the back of my boat had bad eyesight and a nasty habit of throwing over me, clean past the trolling motor and the front of the boat. I tried to teach him how to pitch and flip as we were fishing a narrow creek channel with little pockets (looking for bedding fish). It didn't matter, he would always go back to casting. So as we rounded a small bend in the channel I spotted a big old Grinnel nestled up next to a stump, almost on the bank. I told this fine old Gentleman that there was big old Bass right up by that stump. In one of his best casts of the day, that spinnerbait almost hit that grinnel on the head. Needless to say it was an offering too great for that fish to pass up, and the fight was on! He kept yelling get the net, GET THE NET! I told him, nah! you figure out how to get him off! I went back to fishing and managed to get the water in front of the boat to myself for a while. I warned him not to lip the fish, and after he got it up the boat and saw why, he ended up cutting the bait off and let the fish swim away with it. Mean and Ugly, and full of fight!
