So what size flies do you guys present to Sandbass? I'd like to tie up some clousers of various colors, but I'm not sure what size hook I should be using for this purpose. Will anything #2-#6 do? I'll be using a 4wt on the river for fun.

i use a #6 and size 1 for sand bass and stripers.
i tie red /white clousers with medium eyes.
i am using a 6wt rod though. I am not sure if your 4 wt will have a problem casting these size /weight lures or not.
justin.

With a 4wt rod and medium or large eyes I believe you'll be struggling to cast properly. There is a technique for casting a real heavy fly on light line. In the Great White North they call it "Chuck & Ducking". It's an easy cast, just chuck it out there and remember to duck.

I used # 6 hook and x-small lead eye for my clousers, is fine to cast with my 3 weight flyrod.

Try the Belgian Cast to get those big honkin'' flies and fly trains out there.

hey guys, if you want to use that 4 wt, do it!!! Ties your flies small, and use bead chain eyes, instead of dumbell eyes. You'll have great control, and it will get down to the depth you need. Try an olive woolie bugger, with bead chain eyes, and hold on. I ties a fly that looks like a seducer, in olive, that is awesome.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I need to run and get some bead chain eyes and try that out. I was concerned about the castablity of a fly w/ dumbell eyes.

I have found the most useful size to be an 8. But...6's are a close second. A guy who has been successfully catching these fish on a fly for many years tells me he uses progressively smaller flies as the run progresses. Has caught some of his best fish on 10's and 12's. He uses a conehead instead of beads when he goes that small This has been a killer on the Brazos below Whitney this fall.
