Recently outfitted the boat with new electronics. The new humminbird is showing me a high volatage warning when I have been cranking across the lake for several minutes. The volt gauge show around 16 when underway and quickly goes back to near 12 after idling for a couple mins. Is this normal to see or could the alternator be on the way out?

You might have a problem with the voltage regulator. You need to have it checked out.

Markk, Humminbird sells a power supply called a True Volt or Sure Volt. It will supply the correct voltage to sensitive electronics, and protect them from surges/spikes in power. I always use them on electronics, no matter who makes them. Cheap insurance.

Your alternator typically shouldn't go above around 14 volts if the regulator is working and with a fully charged battery. 16 volts is way over and your alternator should be checked. It shouldn't even spike to 16. Keep an eye on your tachometer as it is sometimes the first to go if voltage is to high.

It really depends on what year model it is because the earlier engines Mercury or OMC had non regulated charging systems What year and hp and make....OPTI

Is the voltage regulator difficult to change on a 93 Merc 150 XR6? Im assuming this is just an electronics component, correct? I've also heard that if the battery was bad, it could be drawing more power and could be the cause as well. Can anyone confirm that?

The voltage regulator is easy to change. There are two of them on it. I just mailed a copy of a service manual on cd rom yesterday to way2manyhobbies. Feel free to call me and I can help you out. I have a 92 150XR6.

The battery and anything connected to the battery can cause this. Had a 1995 200HP XRI with high voltage and finally found a bad automatic bilge pump causing it by disconnecting one added + wire at a time. It was not fused to the battery, NOT SMART. Also had a problem several years ago with an onboard charger causing problems. Good Luck

Ok, I gotta take this one on the chin. The battery was low on water. Caused it to always show low voltage and the engine was constantly trying to charge (or over charge). No problems since.

Fault - low battery water
Root cause - stupidity
