well....you guys are always telling me...."you need to turn on the sarcasm/joke detector."
So I turned it on..... jokes on you dude, but thinks for the congrats anyway....lol I was being sarcastic dude! Just wanted to make you feel awkward for misleading me! Good to see you getting in to the fun! Now as far as learning to turn your computer in to a Frankenstein, go for it dude! I haven't bought a ready-made computer in ages! I would rather put it together myself and know what I am getting. Plus there are simple things you can get started with, such as upgrading RAM, new sound card, wireless lan card, etc... Those are easy to upgrade and give you an excuse to take that bad girl apart!

I have built my last 5 puters and it is fun and all, but nowadays it is almost cheaper to buy a ready made system.

Ghost, They are just filesystems, although I have never heard of NTSE except in a Windows NT "Server" configuration. It stands for New Technology Server/Enterprise Edition. It really wasn't used much except by Systems Operators (SYSOPS) in large corporate environments. Even then most large corporations used Unix. 'Some' of the early internet servers (way, way before the World Wide Web) were NTSE based. He probably meant NTFS which is what most of us are using today. FAT, File Allocation Table, was the file system originally used by MS-DOS. FAT12 showed up in 1977, or there abouts, and was basically for floppy drives. This was in pre-hard drive days. Yep! I've been in it that long. State of the art was 160 Byte, 8 inch, floppy disks. (That's right - BYTES.) Then came FAT16 which was designed for MS-DOS 3.3 and up as well as Windows 1.0, both of which were able to support hard drives up to, I think, 64 MB. That's right - Mega Bytes. Not Giga Bytes. My first hard drive was 10 Megabytes. I thought I was in heaven! This was around 1987. FAT32 came about with MS-DOS 5 and up as well as Windows 95. It supported 'large' hard drives, up to 64 gigabytes. You could use larger drives using FAT16 and FAT32, you just had to partition them to look like multiple drives. That depended on the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) which is a layer closer to the hardware then the filesystems. NTFS, or New Technology File System, showed up in Windows NT and continues on today with Windows 2000, XP and Vista. It is basically able to handle any size hard drive as well as large files. (There was a limit to file size in FAT32 of, I think, 8 GB.) I originally learned on the CP/M File System in a Kaypro CP/M computer. This was before MS-DOS (or PC-DOS as it was originally called.) existed. I was also exposed before that to the UDF (Universal Disk Format filesystem) disk format on the Digital Equipment Company PDP main frame. Aaahhhh! Those were the days. I'll never forget my first exposure to BASIC. It was so weird. Before that I programmed almost entirely in COBOL and Machine Code. And I was one of the lucky ones: I learned the hardware first, in tech school, before I learned the software that made the hardware do stuff. It's not done that way much anymore but it should be. (I could build PWBA's (Printed Wiring Board Assembly) way before I could program them. I built a lot of my own computers back in the 70's, 80's and 90's. I basically did it because I got caught up in the early computer games (Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, NasCar, Half-Life, etc.) and wanted to stay up with the absolute latest in Video and Audio technology. Those were the good old days with the Dual VooDoo 2 video boards. They ran hotter then some toasters so you had to add internal cooling systems or burn them up. It was a VERY expensive habit but I'll never forget the day I installed those VooDoo 2's and started Quake 1. I had never dreamed of anything like that. I haven't built a computer for over 10 years. It's cheaper today to just go buy a new computer then upgrading an old one. (Check the prices of the current line of state-of-the-art video cards and you'll see what I mean.) I've probably got you really confused now. Most people today don't need to know any of it. Just use the computer and be happy! That's what I do these days. Kevin

lol memories... GG take a look at that "financials" info from TPWD. Those 6 figure salaries are mostly in computers. And they asked us those questions at the ATC/TCC when we fished for 8 days straight lol. You CAN have both.

We also get new ones at work every two years... I was just told we are getting new ones in two weeks with 22 flat LCD monitors, I was perfectly happy with my 19 inch FLCD monitor I got in 06.
