im thinkin about getting a kayak to start fishing out of and im questioning their stability, so i figured i would ask my fellow TFF'rs what its like fishing from a kayak as far as casting stability and so on.

also i was thinking about getting one of these crow wing kayaks ( crowwingkayaks.com ) and im hoping someone has an opinion of these kayaks, good or bad?

SOT(sit on top) kayaks as a rule are quite stable so casting is not a problem. If you want to stand to fish, I'd look into the Native Ultimate kayaks. Very stable and EZ to stand in. Theres always a trade off between stability and speed(no kayaks are "fast" so its better to say which have better glide and tracking. Longer kayaks can cover more water with less effort). I suspect the crowwing kayak is very stable but I also suspect it is a handful to paddle any distance due to its wide, short stance. Also, you need to pay attention to freeboard as a "taller" kayak gets blown around in the wind. There seems to be a tread towards a cross between a true kayak and a canoe. Both have certain advantages but IMHO the cross breed does neither very well.
BTW-buying a kayak mail order may be a mistake. Personally, I'd go with a local dealer if at all possible.

i have 3 hobies and if you want as much hands free time for casting it is the way to go/they cost twice as much as paddlers but peddle is easy and go farther with less fatigue

I watched the video and the crow wing kayak is good for puddle jumping but not much else. Watch how it waddles in the water as it is paddled, typical of a short rudderless yak. It's too small for me but for a kid or small person it might work. I could not find out how much it costs from their website and that concerns me. If it's around 300.00 then OK but I would still look and buy locally.

Check out http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/forum/

You should find some decent fishing kayaks for sale there.

stability, IMHO, is the most over valued trait in a kayak. I see guys standing in the aircraft carriers they call a kayak to get an extra 10 yards out of a cast and scratch my head... the whole point of a kayak is stealth.. you can get in so close to the fish that a cane pole could work...

get a boat that you can load and unload yourself (easily) and that you enjoy paddling... that way you will use it more and that will lead to a lot more fish than being able to stand in the boat

Good advice frisco todd, If I had to choose between wider and stable or slim and fast I'd pick slim and fast.

I have a hobie mirage outback that I dearly love. The stability seems to be just right and if you buy one with the turbo peddles you can really cover some ground from what I hear. I don't have one myself but a friend of mine upgraded after he wore his other peddles out.

How do the hobie drive systems work in the in the surf? Are they any good for BTB fishing. Better trade off for trips out to the short rigs?

I've seen many folks get their line cut by the fins while fishing BTB with the pedal drives. You need a paddle anyway for coming back in through the surf. Get a cobra.
