I have fished with a few of you and have noticed that you folks prefer spinners over baitcast reels, why?

in a boat fishing straight down i like baitcasters ( thats the way i was taught by an older gent ) using worms and spinnerbaits off the bank same answer . i dont think you can beat the power and retrievel time of a baitcaster . i really dont like spinning reels but they seem to cast lighter lures easier and when in rome you have to do like the romans do hehe

They also sit on pods a lot better, 'cause they don't roll upside down. That said, I've caught a few carp on my 10-foot Whuppin' Stick rod with an Abu Garcia 6500 C3 reel and it worked just fine.

That is the only problem I have Smile that they turn "upside down" on my 7.00 stand

most people use spinning reels with a bait feeder option or dual drag is another name for it. Big pit spinning reels are made for holding a ton of line for long cast needed at some venues. Also casting 5-8oz of gunk on the end of a bait caster more than 30 yds is usually funny to watch to say the least

I do not understand, I have chunked 10 ounce weights quite a way's with a ABU 6500 and a 12 foot surf rod. Once while at Denison with FTWBrett I was slamming 3 ounce egg sinkers against the Okie concrete wall.

I think the spinning reels fight the fish better than baitcasters. I use both. You can get the 11 and 12' rods for baitcasters.

My favorite carpin'/buffin' set up is my 7ft rod w/ a baitcaster that's a clicker (but I'm mostly vertical fishing from a slip & manuvering a 12ft rod would be a huge pain, plus the clicker option is nice)

I'd say that either one would work, but I've never caught a buff or a common on an ultra-light spinning rod - it's on my "to do list" in '08!

I grew up using baitcasters, but started using the big spinning stuff for the Euro Style. Since I started fishing the 12' spinning rods, I've been looking for a way to mesh baitcasters with the ease of pods and alarms.

I started using the Abu Garcia 6500C3's with one piece 6'6" bass rods, but didn't feel that I was all the way there. I set them up on Bank Buddies, looping the line under the Bank Buddy bar with the baitclicker on in freespool; and that worked great, but I wanted more...

I switched rods- I still use the 6500's, but now I use BPS Tourney Special rods- MH 7'6" with the telescoping handle. The fit in my holdall(ProLogic Giant) and snap perfectly into the butt rests on my pod. They hang upside down on the pod, but I'm used to it- No complaints.

I like to think I can cast the same baits/distance with my BC's, but the truth is the big Euro Spinning combos can get larger baits(Method/PVA quite a bit farther than my BC Beauties.

The first time I fished Town Lake was the first time I really felt like I did not have enough rod to get to the fish. That's when I decided to go Euro.

Find the techniques that work for you. Be comfortable with what you use, but make sure you try as many styles/setups as you can- That's how you dial in your personal methods.

Thanks Chade My set up looks like the one you listed above the bank buddy ones. Except I either use my ABU Record, a Calcutta 400, ABU Rocket 6600, or some ABU 6500's

Nine foot medium rods will take care of the distance issue.

Anyone have a pod for sale?

There's 3 reasons why I use spinning tackle for BIG carp waters, or waters I don't know about:

1. They fit better on my pod when I have the electronic bite detectors mounted. I've never been able to get the baitcasters to work properly with the bite detectors.

2. The bait feeders on the spinning reels don't leave as much tension on the line as the bite clickers on the baitcasters. The fish are not as likely to feel the pull and spook. Of course, if you fish a bolt rig that doesn't matter at all. (I don't.)

3. I saved the main reason for last: I normally have my baitcasters, which I bought custom made for catfish, spooled with 40 to 60 pound high-vis yellow line. They don't hold much more then 100 yards. I just can't see changing line everytime I want to go carp fishing. If I would have had them rigged like that when I hooked the 30.1 pounder at Town Lake it would have spooled me. I had put on new 14 pound low-vis line just for the ATC and the fish almost spooled me as it was.

With all of that said, when fishing waters where I am not likely to get over the 20 pound range, I normally use spin-CAST reels. (You know, ZEBCO 33!) It just makes it more fun.
