If I want to cast on the back side of the 3rd dropoff, how far would I need to cast to put my bait there? I realize that low and high tides will make a difference in how far I will need to cast. So, can anybody give me a ballpark idea of the casting range needed? Let's assume that I keep my feet dry at all times. Yea, I know. It sounds like a math problem. Does anybody know what that range is for the Texas coast?

If you can hit 70-150 yards that will cover most of South Padre and other beaches.

Thanks, that gives me a yardstick (no pun intended) against which to measure my casts. I'm going to mark off that distance and practice on dry land against the wind. If anybody else has any input, please let me know.

Remember medium to large chunks of bait will kill your distance.

My friend could cast his Surf Setup with a fishfinder rig 88 yards but when we added bait and wind he only hit 45-50 at best.

Then again he sucks at casting..

Is your friend (who sucks) using a baitcaster of spinning reel?

He was using a Penn 950ssm with 25# Ande on a 11 foot rod.

It's a Spinning setup.

down around Bolivar-Crystal beach area to get past the 3rd bar is probably 2-300 yards or more, give or take depending what part of the beach your on.

Does anybody know what the casting distance is to the the back side of the 3rd drop-off in other parts of the coast, such as North Padre?

Mate, check out some of the English seafishing sites for clip down distance rigs, we regulary have to fish 100yds+ on our beaches

http://www.btinternet.com/~kevin.l.j.knight/rigs.htm

try that for a basic guide, pm me if you want any more info etc, i build my own and will send you a couple if you get stuck

I respectfully appreciate you answer, but due to my age and physical limitations, casting from the shore is my only option. Thanks, nonetheless.

I'd say that its no more than 100-150 yds. thats still asking for a huge cast from standing on the beach.

OK, now that we have some rough idea of the distance, let me ask you about the equipment. Spinning reel or baitcaster? What about a 15 foot / 2 piece rod? Would that get you out there? I'm assuming 30# test line and about a 4 ounce weight? What's the best rig for distance?

12 foot is about all you need, after that the distance gained isn't that much. From my experience.

1 Piece is ideal but lets be reasonable that is a going to be a PIA to haul around.

For the surf 20-40 pound is great, I personally use #25 in most situations.

As far as the weight it really depends on the surf, I would take a few 4,6, and 8oz spider weights that way you are prepared for all surf conditions.

What about the reel for greatest distance, spinning or baitcaster? Also, what models do you recommend?
