I am new to the Austin area and am originally from Salt Lake City
Utah. I am an avid fisherman and outdoors man and am looking for some general information on fishing in Texas. I fly fish and also have a 9ft personal pontoon with a motor. I would like to know how long I have to live in Texas to get a residents license the cost and so forth. I also have two kids that are almost 4 yrs old and they both love to fish as well. So I am also looking for some good
places to take the kids. I am a trout fisherman coming from Utah so the bass thing is a little new to me but it is something that I would really like to get into. Any resources or info you guys can give me will be a great help and I look forward to chatting with all the users.

Thanks

JayDub,
Welcome to Paradise Pardnoo !! WE have some great fishing all over this great state. I'm sure you'll be able to find some good spots, especially around the Austin area.

A good starting place is the Texas Parks and Wildlife website :

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/recreational/fishreport.phtml?EcoRegion=PH

Also, you might want to buy a copy of the Texas Lakes and Bays Fishing Atlas. It's jam packed with tips, GPS points, where and how to fish, etc.

And just hang around here some. Plenty of very opinionated ideas and tips on how to get started.

Welcome. Got some cousins over around Provo - love Utah.

A good place to start bass fishing from your boat would be Lake Bastrop hot water outlet you can catch bass year round in that area. For the kids I would go to the state park on the perdenales it might still be called reimer's. the white bass are about to start running good in there and its kid friendly and lots of fish! Have fun!!

Check out the trout stockings at the TPW web site.

I think you have to be here 6 months to get a resident license. However, you can fish from the shore (or dock) inside any state park without a license.

"Life is a matter of luck and the odds of success are in no way enhanced by extreme caution." - Erich Topp, German U-boat Commander, 1943.

When in doubt, set the hook.

Welcome!!!! Don't forget to check out the whites/hybrids/stripers section of the TFF. There can be some great fly-rod action for them during the summer months when they are schooling everywhere on top!!! And good eatin' too.

Welcome to Texas! I got here from Colorado as fast as I could. Being from Utah, I know that you will be interested in the Guadalupe River between Canyon Dam and New Braunfels, along River Road. It is stocked with rainbows every winter. There is a chapter of Trout Unlimited that you can get in touch with at http://www.grtu.org/

If people focused on important issues, there would be a shortage of fishing poles.

austin is a great city and u will love it. first take ur pontoon boat and hit lake austin, sorry lady bird lake....great bass and perch fishing. lady bird is a paddle and electric motor only lake. head towards longhorn dam and u will tear them up on a wooly bugger.

white bass will be moving in a few months up the rivers...again great fun on the long pole.

and if you have to get some trout head south about 30 miles and do the guadalupe for trout.

that should hel[p you get started.

OOO...welcome to texas
