Opinions on the best cranking battery for a 200 Optimax? Also, any ideas on the best place to get one quickly (preferrably without having to have it shipped). I live in the Austin area. Thanks!

Go to Walmart. Never had a problem with their batteries and they're everywhere if you ever do.

I always used a trolling motor battery to crank my 100 hp Merc. The cranking seems to be first rate and with a jumper wire I can use the cranking battery in a pinch to troll some more (12V troller). I carry jumper cables for safety. Don't know how it would work on big (175 - 300 hp)motors but works great on my 100hp. I like Trojans but have used Wal-Marts, too. WallyWorld is everywhere and can service or sell a new battery 2/7.

For cranking battery I have always used the Interstate brand and have never had a problem. I personally stay away from the trolling deep cycle batteries for cranking.

I use the wally world stuff for my T. Motor, but for the crank I like the Cabelas AGM - they are deep cycle with well over the 1K MCA required for DFI outboards. That means you have all the long term accessory power you need as well as strong cranking power. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templa...m&noImage=0

I use Delco Vovager (sp) batteries. Never had a problem with them.

i used interstate just like my dad did for years, last year i switched to the optimas, one cause there smaller and lighter. but i think my trolling motor gives me a little more time on the water running them especially on a windy day. They are now be sold at autozones and oriellys.
but as you can how this thread is going everyone has there own flavor.

You definitely want a cranking battery. Get one with at least 1000 MCA's. Most Optimax's require this. If not it can void your warranty. Also, you need to ensure it has alot of reserve capacity to run your electronics, livewell pumps, and start your big motor.

Ever get to a lake or tournament and had to find a Optima or Interstate at 10:00 at night or 5:00 in the morning. I know these batteries are good, but Walmart's always open and close. Warranties for no charge replacement are 18 mo. to 2 years, no questions asked.

actually... 3 years on the Maxx... found this out the easy way(for a change!)... took both my truck batteries in there.. they were right at 3.5 years old and ran down too quick. (reserve capacity not within specs).... those $68.oo a piece batteries cost me a grand total of $12 each for brand new ones... limited warranty for 5??? years I thnk.... They got my business because I can find a walmart on every other street corner open 24 hours a day/7 days a week....
my cranking battery is superhuge.. group 78 I think... its a monster!
