I am not looking for an exact quote here just wanting an idea of how many pennies to save up. Can anyone give me an idea of what the cost would be to add hydraulic steering to an 1985 175 Mercury?

I bought my Teleflex pro on ebay for well under 700 dollars and put it in in 3 hours. My old cables had started to freeze up and I didn't want to spend the time cleaning them.
Now I can steer with my little pinky.

well worth putting on hydraulic steering.

they just took a price increase. that's why it may be hard to find a really good deal anymore on them.

700.00 for a complete sea star pro hydraulic system is CHEAP!!!

Thanks for the info. I am hoping to put the money together this spring, I agree, even if it is $1500 I know it will be worth it. I will start looking into how comfortable I would be trying to install it myself. I am no expert but I have done some of the work on the boats I have owned.

Go for it. Taking your old steering out will be harder than putting in the new steering.
If you are considering the tilt steering, know that you will have to drill a 3/4 inch hole somewhere above the steering on your console to mount the remote fill for your hydraulic fluid. Had I known that ahead of time I would have gotten the standard helm.

You will need a helper to fill the system. One person holding the bottle of fluid and turning the steering wheel while the other opens/closes the bleeders and holds the motor from turning.

If you watch screamandfly you can get a real good deal on a Sea Star Pro system. Have gotten several their for under 400.00. do`nt mess with the cheaper Baystar or the regular Sea Star. When buying a used system always replace the seals and flush the system before the install. Sea Star web site has on line instructions and tips for simpler install. GOOD LUCK
