My Johnson 130 hp 1996 model. Seems to take a very long time to warm up. I start it and run it very slow for about ten minutes and then try to accelerate and it will only hit about 3000 rpm’s so I back off and putt around for another 10 minutes and try it again and it still seems like it does not want to go. After about 25 minutes it will finally go. Runs great after it does warm up. Does this sound like its taking to long? My last boat had an inboard it was ready to go after a few minutes.

After you start motor and try take off if the motor begins to stall try pressing the choke to prime motor, be careful not to flood.

Is that an expensive repair?

I would check the thermos first, most of the time this sounds like a power pack problem. At start the power pack sences the engine temp if cold it advances the timing until it warms up if it does not pick an imput back form the the thermostats it might cause this problem. A power pack cost around 350.00 this is the brains of the operation. It sounds like your timing is staying advanced. Have you ever changed your power pack? They normally only last about five years, depends on how many hours you have on the motor. If you have never had to change it sounds like you got lucky for 11 years

I bought the boat used earlier this year. I’m not sure when or if it was ever replaced. Anyone recommend someone honest to check it out for me. Someone local.

I can tell you one guy that you should NEVER take a boat to, private message me if you want his name. Read Opti's signature and you will understand why it is so important to take your boat to someone who knows what they are doing. There are a lot of hack job mechanics out there that will take your money and do a half [censored] job and somehow not feel guilty about any of it. Take it to a certified mechanic.

Try to find a certified Mech they have the eguiment to check the power pack out, if you take it to someone that just changes out parts this could get very costly.
