I was there a few days ago. The bite seemed to be slower than what I am used to but we still caught good #s with fish up to 9 lbs. I cannot wait to go back because when we were leaving we just started to figure them out. Next time!!!!!

Fishing with big baits is a good idea.. I like big worms like The 10" power worms or if you prefer crank baits the Norman DD-22 is a good bait on the long points in the main lake.. Fish the islands due west of the hotel on the East bank, that is located on the north end of the dam.. On the South end of the dam there are also a few Humps with trees on them.. Look for the depth changes around them..
If you are in this part of the country then you surely should stop at Falcon on your way down.. Just an hour north on the Rio Grande.. I am sure you have heard of it..
Good Luck! James

I have a question about Suger Lake. Do you tow your boat there and back or just hire a guide. If you do tow the boat across the border any pro's and con's and where do you stay. I would love to go and try it out. Thanks.

There are a few places to stay at Sugar.. Noe's old place still has a hotel.. I have heard a lot of good and bad.. But it is survivable.. There is also a hotel in town that I hear is good.. But I am drawing a blank on the name right now..
I have a house in Zapata so I don't stay over night at the lake..It takes about one hour from Zapata to the lake.. Sometimes a little faster..
You need your Truck title, Boat Title, Registartion Card, Trailer title, Motor title.. Drivers license.. Easiest to keep em' all together..In The near future you may need a passport but for now you don't. I have had the agent ask for them all.. And then I have just had them ask where I was going.. Best to have them with you..
You can hire a guide and a lot of them will stay there with you if you want to fish a few days.. Or you can do an easy day trip from Zapata.. It is easier with a guide for sure, especially the first time you go so you can learn the ropes..
Charlie Haralson is a great choice.. He knows the lake well.. his number is 956-744-6235 Good Luck..
