well, I bought my first yak a dark green Scrambler XT by Ocean Kayak, I'll be duck hunting out of this a lot and I have to carry, drag or what ever in timber and some rough surfaces,,,
Would it help protect the bottom of my Scramble XT if I primed and sprayed it with Truck Bedliner?
I'm guessing it would help with the durability and less scratches and better glide on the water.
any ideas? has anyone tried this before?
Thanks.

I don't know about the glide on water being improved as those coatings are usually rough but it would be tough. Think too of how much weight it will add and you'll have to consider that in the limit of the craft but I have seen my neighbor do that with his OHV and it works good.

It would make it too heavy and slow.
Don't do it.

Don't know. You could be the sacrificial lamb and try it for us. If it works well we could do it to. If not we won't. LOL

A Good kayak should be thick enough to protect it from years of abuse. I would think that the coating would be better on an already scratched up surface or older kayak and I'll bet that a new slick surface will not allow it to stick anyway. It is certainly worth trying and might add years to the life of your kayak I doubt it will have any noticeable adverse effect on hydrodynamics either.

Just a quick note if you havent sprayed it already. After washing the yak with liquid dish soap, allow it to dry overnight. Then use a butane/propane torch to "flash" the plastic. You will see a chemical reaction on the surface. Use the flame to lick the yak without getting it hot. This process helps the paint/primer to adhere. This is a technique that I have used before and I will always do it when painting any type of plastic.
Where are they hiding???

On another note, I have messed with radio control boats for a while. It is common practice to spray a rough coat on the bottom as opposed to any kind of polish. The handling is greatly improved and there is a speed gain due to the water not "sticking" to the boat.
My disclaimer: although I have never paddled a radio controlled boat, I hope that the results qualify as an improvement. If you use this technique and it doesnt work, I cant repair the damage but I'll still go fishing with ya when you are in the Houston area.
