went to arkansas with my bro-in-law to the white river to do some trout fishing. i had never been trout fishing (other than down at the coast for specs) so this was new to me. the cool thing is, we did it like bass fishing. we used spinning reels and rapalas...
i caught my first brown trout, rainbow trout, smallmouth bass. i even caught a lamprey. i also caught a fish that i had no idea what it is. it looks like a combo between a carp and a bowfin.

check out the pics...
1st brown trout

here is the lamprey. it came off of a nice brown that it was attached to. it pulled free from the big brown

nice rainbow...

nice!

Awesome pictures! Great fish, I LOVE smallmouth bass. The master of the Black Bass family, hehehe.

As for your mystery fish - Did you get any better pictures of it?

You're right, it's definitely not a common carp. Scales are too small, body shape isn't quite right, and the dorsal and tail fins are all wrong.

It looks to me to be a type of chub, or maybe a type of sucker.

I'd need a better picture though I think.

that is the only pic i got. the mouth had a few teeth in it, and it bit a rapala. the watrer temp was 55 degrees if that helps at all. i was thinking of that same fish you caught in your net, but the mouth is different than the one you had. It's mouth was in the front. it looked like a huge shiner almost

this place is in north arkansas near mountain home and buffalo shoals by Lake Norfolk. They stock trout in there every year. The world record brown is caught out of the white river. (40 lbs)
i would say 10 hours from dallas. you would need to make a weekend out of it. it was a BLAST!!!

Great pics and report! Looks like some fun was had by all!

I heard that the White River is good fishing but didn't know one could camp there. Did you have to get anyone's permission to camp and fish that stretch?

trout are a blast to catch and great to eat

Hooking a fish is like playing string with a cat. The exact size, shape, color of string matters less than how you wiggle it- and little cats are easier to fool than big ones. John Gierach

it was a great time. there are a few state parks you can fish, but we found a place called Rileys that was free. Matt lives in Memphis, so it is only a 4 hour drive for him and he has been there like 10 times. It was a good location, not far from several places to fish. The trout fishing will be good anywhere with 50 miles of the dam. After that, the water gets a little too warm for most of the trout minus the rainbows. they can stand temps in the 70's.

all fish were released by the way

Ted,

Your bro-in-law is in my wedding. That trip is a blast. Tell Matt that one of the 870 Boys said hi. I was surfing through the pics and saw the one of you standing on the rock with the river in the background below you. I told myself that looked very familiar. I have one of Matt, me, and the other 870 Boys in that exact spot.

Craig
