I am deployed in Baghdad, and have a chance to fish for common carp and grass carp (very very large ones). So, I am looking for baits that are easy to make/acuire, and are fairly unique so the fish are not used to seeing it. Here is what was caught using Gulp! I also missed a couple that were in the 24" - 36" range.

Like said above... Try bread, or sweet corn.

On a very small hook.... I use #4 mustads.

Thank you, and everyone else over there, for fighting to keep us free!

Hello there, SSG Goodrich!

Thank you for your service. I see you are a MP, my first unit out of basic training was the 770th MP.

Assuming that you have a mess hall nearby, you could use corn, chick peas, bread, or black eye peas. It's always a good idea to make friends with a cook, or the supply sergeant, to get some free baits. :-)

Good luck!

I've caught a couple of common and a buff on Pinto beans before. You might try them.

Thanks for the service, man, we really appreciate it.

As far as baits, IF you can get it, sweet corn, uncooked, is probably one of the best and easiest carp baits.

Carp have a "sweet tooth" so to speak, so anything sweet is good.

Hell, they'll eat worms and insects, too, but so will everything else in the water.

Bread moistened and wadded into dough works breat too, white bread molds up real easily.

That is a mirror carp? That is a first for me. Thanks for the ID.

I saw a couple of grass carp that are very close to the 48" range. I have a couple of pics of them I will post later.

Just a quick note to let you know that your appreciation and support is felt by all of us, and it is an honor serving our great nation.

Biff, Mirror Carp and Common Carp are technically the same species.

Mirrors are basically common carp with unusual scale patterns.

They are very common in Europe where carp are bred for size, and very uncommon in America where almost all carp are wild and feral lol.

No idea how common they are over where you are right now!

Grass Carp are actually not Carp at all, they are a fish that's actually called a White Amur. They are in the minnow family like Common Carp, but otherwise unrelated.

But 48" Amur are some huge fish, congrats!

Hope you can land some equally huge commons!

Good luck, and be safe!

I don't think that's a mirror carp that he got there... Not sure what it is, but it just doesn't look like a carp...
