I was wondering with this last little cold front, are the flounder starting to move? I'm hoping to be down there next week and catch a few of them. I've seen some good catchs of redfish and trout on here but not many flatfish stories.

They're starting to. I caught 5 Saturday on 3" Gulp new-penney shrimp on a jighead. Crowds out there suck though. Every time I'd hook one, four people would immediately shuffle over to stand directly on top of the spot I was catching them. Otherwise I would have limited, I bet. I hate people...

I fished rollover sat afternoon, they were catching flounder. Some of the more experienced folks gave me some pointers, that helped me out quite a bit. I've never fished for flounder, and I was a bit of a klutz at first. It was great fun.

After Saturday I might start...

Now that I have caught a flounder, I don't mind passing along all I have learned. Seriously the old timers were using sensitive rods, light line, but with a 30 pound mono leader, a small treble hook. I was told to use a 2 ounce flat round sinker, on top of the leader. Let the sinker hang freely, above the leader, so that it slides across the main fishing line. This helps reduce hang ups. (It worked) Finger mullet was the #1 bait, hook him through the lower jaw upward. When flounder strike, it is kind of like a small but sharp peck. Then they might swim around a little, or maybe not. But wait till you feel a second peck, then break his neck setting the hook. I saw quite a few large ones caught. Just when I was getting the hang of it, the weather took a turn for the worse, and I quit for the evening.

Hmm.. Good info thanks. I guess putting the sinker above the leader lets the finger mullet swim...? Was it a flourocarbon leader?

Exactly. You want the bait to swim. A flounder's bite to me feels like you're hung on bottom, it's very subtle.
I use mono leader, it works for me...

We went recently (rockport) and flats were slow. We gigged about 10 overnight between three people.

No - we were at Seawolf Park, which was way more crowded than I care for when fishing.
This was my first time flounder fishing with a rod/reel in 15+ years. On at least 2 of them I was 100% convinced I was hung on the bottom. On the biggest one (19.5"er) I was actually walking over to the spot where I hung up to clear my line when he took off. Seems like they set themselves on the hook pretty good if you let em.

We first started catching them on our trout / redfish rigs: Gulp shrip on screw-on jigheads, under about 18" of 20lb mono leader with a swivel. Caught two this way.
Started paying attention to the folks around us and it seemed everybody was using these tandem rigs: steel leader with two clip-ons for hooks which I bought for the second day out. I put a weighted jig head on each clip; frozen shrimp on one hook and Gulp new-penny shrimp on the other. The flounder took the Gulp over the real shrimp on 3 out of 5 caught with the tandem rig if you believe that!

They are moving real good at Pelican Island. A week ago I got a 6 and a half pounder not even fishing for them. I usually fish for specs and get an occasional flounder but when they hit they hit. My buddy got a 5 pounder as well. We also watched some people that were using finger mullet real in a few stringers full. http://www.myfishingpictures.com/watermark.php?file=134635
