Was wondering what you guys are getting with your 06-07 6.0 Diesels. My buddy computer said almost 19mpg last weekend from Austin to south of SA. He has an Edge programer on it as well.
I know there have been many problems with the 6.0 Ford, but I know just as many that have never had a problem. None the less im torn between the Dodge and Ford. I think the Dodge is going to get better fuel mileage but the Fords sure are nicer. I know we have talked about this before, but give me your input.

Do not put a programmer on the 6.0 it will eventually need head bolts and gaskets anyway there is no reason so rush it.
The 6.0 will get 17-19 unloaded on the highway, 14-16 in city and around 12-14 towing maybe even a little more if you aren't running like a raped ape.
I tried to buy a 07 6.0 and they couldn't find the truck I wanted so I ended up with an 08.
I know it is personal preference but I lost my tail on a Dodge truck few years back and swore I would never buy another and I won't. It was a gas one and I wouldn't hesitate to own a Cummings but not with a Dodge wrapped around it.

I heard from a friend that owns a big junkyard down here and pulls alot that the 6.0's that actually pull(and I don't mean a bass boat) and are used for what they were designed for are always having problems. Your every day city drivers with 6.0's are having few problems. Just what I have been told.

Stephen,
I had an 06 6.0 F250 and got rid of it as the best I ever got was 13 in town, 11 towing the boat(ZX225) & maybe, did I say maybe 15 going down the highway not towing. It definitely did not do what Ford told me it would, they said it would be better than my wife's Excursion.
My wife's 2000 Excursion has a 7.3 that gets 14-15 in town, 14 pulling the boat & 18-19 on the highway.
I would recommend you find a good used 7.3 with 70,000-90,000 miles on it and you will be way ahead of the game.
JMHO/personal experience.
My daughter had an 05 6.0 and she has got rid of it as well.
I heard to 6.4s are not doing any better on mpg than the 6.0s were.

Stephen,
I have a '03 6.0L F250 FX4 that is bone stock. I get 18 on the highway, 16 in town, and about 16 pulling my TR-21. I regularly change the oil, oil filter, and fuel filters and have never had a problem with mine. My Dad owns a Dodge, and as has been previously mentioned, no issues with the Cummins, but lots of issues with the truck.
I have a good friend that works at a local Ford Dealership and he also told me not to chip the motor because it will eventually stretch the head bolts and blow out the head gaskets.

Thanks for the input guys keep it comming.
Im not sure I would be happy with the diesel truck if I was not able to chip them. Im not wanting to street race, but rather have the speed to pass some one while doing 70 and getting better than 10mpg like my current gas. Based on the above the Ford is sounding less desirable.

Stephen...you don't need a chip to do what you want. These diesel's have all the power to pass someone while doing 70. My 01 7.3 was stock out side of the AIS air box and could do it and my 08 6.4 just does it a little faster Not trying to talk you into getting the Ford, get what you want I just don't want you thinking it won't do it without a chip. Sounds like you need to take a ride with the boat in tow with a diesel. Good luck.

I have a 2005 F250 6.0 with 46,000 miles on it. as far as motor issues, I have had zero. I run amsoil in it and keep my filters changed. I tow my 2005 basscat cougar with it and I get great mileage. I get around 20 on the highway traveling over 75mph, I have a heavy foot.
now if I can just keep from falling asleep behind the wheel...

I love that cummins, my uncle has two of them, one is 98 and other is an 04 and he has yet to have even the slightest problem out of either of them, however I have heard way to many horror stories from others on them, it make me scared to buy one. I would be ok with the ford, and like others have said there is no need to chip them to pass at 70 the old belief that diesels are slow and slugish is long gone, they are street machines from the factory.
Just one question, why is chevy/gm completely out of the running, not trying to say one is better than the other, but my dad and brother both have one, and have had zero issues and get great milleage, just something else to consider. I really like their trucks, but personaly GM is out of the question for me because they dont offer a manual transmision or a solid front axle 4X4 and those are the only reasons why.

Other than the fact that I dont like the way the Chevy or GMC's look being a 6.6L is a ton of motor and I from what I have been told they dont get the mileage of the 5.9 dodge or 6.0 ford.
Dodge and Ford should have there new 1/2 ton diesels out in less than a year, along with dodge's new body style, which from what I have seen looks really sweet. I will probably just hold off until then, no what I wanted to do but I know I will wish I had the 1/2 ton diesel next year if I buy the 3/4 ton now.

Well for what it is worth I hear the 6.0 is bottom of the barel on mpg but who cares.(dad gets 19/20 on '04 duramax) I agree with you on the half ton diesels. I am looking at getting a new truck in the next year and am really thinking about the half ton diesels if they will get the milleage folks say they will.

Stephen, go look at websites for the three diesel engines and see what the owners say about fuel mileage. I am a dodge owner and I like mine with little or no truck repairs in the 140k and 8 years I have had it. Here is a link to the DieselPlace forum and Chevy owners. Here is a post from the DieselTruckResource forums on the 6.7 Dodge diesel. Here is a thread from the DieselStop Ford forums. In my opinion the Chevy is getting the best mpgs of any of the current trucks. If you go back and get a 5.9 Dodge that would be the leader but they don't make them anymore.

I have an '06 Dodge with the 5.9L.. As with any other engine the Mileage is directly related to input on the go pedal.. I am using the Smarty Programmer on the lowest level just to get a slight timing advance for mileage and throttle responsiveness.. Unloaded at 70mph on the freeway I regularly see 21-22 mpg. If I keep the boost below 10psi when accelerating around town I see 17-18 in town.. Typically pulling my boat (18ft Ranger) I see 17-18 at 65-70mph. I am not a big fan of Dodge, but when the time came for me to purchase a diesel rig, the cummins motor was the only choice for me, so I live with the unfortunate fact that it is wrapped in a dodge.. There seems to be alot of good feedback from the guys running the new 6.7L Cummins, but I would be scared of the overly complex emissions equipment they are having to strap on them (Thx CARB 2007).. I frequent http://www.turbodieselregister.com for information and trends on the cummins powered vehicles. JT
